Far too much of this book is dedicated to the MC droning on and on about should she trust him but she really likes him. The stuff between that is good hence the three stars, but I’m done with this series.

Bad Start But Quickly Becomes Enjoyable

I almost gave up the book at the very beginning with the excessive discussion of female anatomy, But that doesn’t continue. The rest of the book is fun, though a little goofy and over the top at times. I enjoyed it and will be reading the next in the series.

I do enjoy a good Cyberpunk Story

Sorry, this is going to be a little vague, but I don't want to spoil anything. The story had a number of well written action pieces combine with good cyberpunk lifestyles and world-building. The MC starts off one way and then changes over time in ways that seem appropriate to the story events. This is semi "realistic" sci-fi and that seems rare these days.

I generally love Nathan Lowell books, and this one isn’t bad but it isn’t good either. Even for his slow burn style this book should have been trimmed to about half its length. The same conversations happen over and over and over… Even for Nathan Lowell, this book ends after barely anything has actually happened.

Still a great series

Space Opera?

I think this technically can qualify as a space opera, but it doesn't fit the image of the genre I have in my head. I think the plot got too convoluted. It's hard to explain without giving spoilers. I will say that I enjoyed the characters in this story - not to start with, but eventually.

I will consider other books by Emily Tesh.

Pretty Good, though Not Great Superhero Story

The author has created some interesting characters who do have mild story arcs. The plot was very comic book like. There is some character backgrounds given, but nothing too deep. None of the narrators are bad, but each brings their own style and it did push me out of the story a little each time there was a perspective change.

Overall I did enjoy this for what it was and I would give a try to any sequel.

Simple Fun - Almost YA, but NOT Family Friendly

This was a fun what I call "popcorn book". It was fun to listen to without requiring much focus. I mostly liked the book. At times it had overly silly characters or events, But trust me, you do not want to be listening to this in the car with others. There are only a few such spots, and if listening on your own, their fine.

I will be checking out this authors other works int he future.

A Fun Story Continues

I'm surprised by the negative reviews I've seen. I've enjoyed this series and this is just more of the same. It's a fun, light listen with adventure and magical combat. Without giving away any spoilers, there are important plot points that do happen in this book. The main character continues to be clever, finding ways to contribute and fight while having the mark, and his friends continue to be bad-asses in various ways.

Story Follows the Wrong Character

First I want to say that it was good and I will get the sequel. But I find knowing the detractions more helpful in reading reviews, so I'm going to list mine.

(1) The majority of the book is not told from Eli's perspective. The main character is interesting, just not as interesting as I think Eli was. (2) This feels like the second book in a series. So many things come up that the characters understand but you don't, and your not given details. I realize this is likely to be fleshed out more in the later books, but it does detract from this one. (3) There were a few deus-ex-machina moments that while far from ruining the book, did disappoint me. (4) A large number of the non-primary characters are fools, so much so that it makes you wonder how the kingdom in question can even exist.
