Historia
My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me. So begins a tale told from his own point of view - a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

whimsical and wistful travel log
Revisado: 03-05-24
fabulous. Wonderful. loved every god damn second of it. Such beautiful prose, and characters that are so full of life it feels more like a diary than a novel, truly, it's so easy to suspend your disbelief in this world.
I don't regret getting into such an unfinished story, but I do wonder when exactly we're gonna start killing some kings. And when exactly we're gonna see some ever-burning lamps.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

My 15 year old self would have screamed for joy
Revisado: 12-12-22
I thoroughly loved this story. A slightly awkward romp for a young man in a magical land on a mission to save a rapidly fading old dog. This story is further proof to me that King is at his best when fully embracing the fantasy in his universe. I wish I could give this book to my teenage self, just as I was falling in love with the genre.
The slightly tinny, and granular prose of King meets nostalgic nursery rhyme fantasy. This is the kind of side story I was hoping could spin out from the Dark tower series. While there's little to no direct connection to Roland and his Katet, the fabric of King's Dark Tower universe is woven into every corner of Empis.
The ending also manages to tie up most all threads by the end, a rare treat for a King novel.
I've never listened to anything narrated by Numrich but he quickly became one of my favorites. Can't imagine a better voice to hear Charlie in.

Historia
When a ghost ship is discovered, its crew presumed dead after trying to reach the storm-shrouded island Akina, Navani Kholin must send an expedition to make sure the island hasn't fallen into enemy hands. Knights Radiant who fly too near find their Stormlight suddenly drained, so the voyage must be by sea. Shipowner Rysn Ftori lost the use of her legs but gained the companionship of Chiri-Chiri, a Stormlight-ingesting winged larkin, a species once thought extinct. Now Rysn's pet is ill, and any hope for Chiri-Chiri’s recovery can be found only at the ancestral home of the larkin.

just plain swashbuckling awesome
Revisado: 08-26-22
I'm so happy Rysn and Lopen got time to shine in this book, and God damn did they shine. Sanderson really flexes how well established side characters can really step into the spotlight once they've marinated in the main series for a while.
A real and true delight for any fan of the series.

Unfortunately Less than the sum of its parts
Revisado: 08-06-22
I enjoyed this series, I especially enjoyed it once the author changed. This book became pretty tiresome with all the battles but it comes together well in the back third of the novel. I think Sanderson's characterizations and dialogue better clue you into each character's true personalities. However, unfortunately I finished the series feeling underwhelmed. Jordan's world building is so fun and often inspiring, but it gets bogged down in so much banal political theater that you forget you were intrigued by the people of these lands and their customs in the first place.
this ends on a really strong note, but I feel like I missed out on a lot of interesting events and places along the way.

Ehhhh
Revisado: 04-15-22
Easily the most incomplete ending in this series up to this point. I was really invested in Egwene's antics up to now, but the most interesting parts of this book have little or nothing to do with her. When it finally starts getting interesting, the story abruptly ends. Not upset, just kinda bummed.

Every nation needs its creation myth, and since Texas was a nation before it was a state, it's no surprise that its myths bite deep. There's no piece of history more important to Texans than the Battle of the Alamo, when Davy Crockett and a band of rebels went down in a blaze of glory fighting for independence from Mexico, losing the battle but setting Texas up to win the war.

Should be mandatory reading
Revisado: 09-03-21
I already knew a lot of the history in the first half of this book. The details and the people I didn't know of were really fascinating though. I wasn't as conscious of a lot of the early 20th century history surrounding the Alamo and the efforts to prop up the myths. It makes sense though, I wasn't really taught much of this in school. I really wish this book or one like it had been available in high school. I think Texas history class would have been a lot more interesting as a result.

But the journey is not theirs alone. They are joined by a handful of travelers, each with a reason for fleeing the city. Among them is Bellis Coldwine, a renowned linguist whose services as an interpreter grant her passage - and escape from horrific punishment.

good but slow
Revisado: 05-28-21
This book took forever to really hook me, I was almost 2/3 of the way through before anything going on was really interesting. I believe this is mostly due to the abysmally boring and shallow main character, Bellis. She's so consumed by the thought of escape that she never appreciates how incredible the goddam steampunk pirate city on a mission to reach the ends of the planet is. Nonetheless the prose itself is leagues above your average Fiction writer and by the final chapters I was thoroughly enthralled. I just wish the book was more about all the other characters knocking about.

Historia
In the world of Warbreaker, each person is born endowed with the power of one Breath―which can be sold and collected by others, then used to Awaken objects and even corpses to do their bidding. A few individuals who die in glory return as gods, with the power of thousands of Breath, but no memory of their mortal lives―and are enthroned in the Court of Gods in Hallandren’s capital. To Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris, the abuse of Breath and the claim of the Returned to be gods are repugnant blasphemy.

ehh, meh
Revisado: 05-30-20
It wasn't bad, but I'll probably forget most everything.
The magic system seems pretty cool, but they don't explore it enough to really carry the story.
The story really suffers from the scenario where all the events talked about in the world's history sound a lot more interesting than the ones unfolding within the book's plot.

Historia
All good things must come to an end, Constant Listener, and not even Stephen King can write a story that goes on forever. The tale of Roland Deschain's relentless quest for the Dark Tower has, the author fears, sorely tried the patience of those who have followed it from its earliest chapters. But attend to it a while longer, if it pleases you, for this volume is the last, and often the last things are best.

Possibly the most hellish ending to a hellish journey. I pity Roland, that he didn't die somewhere along his quest before ever reaching the Tower.
