Honestly, I cannot think of a better description for this book than the title. Grizzled ex-cop, dealings with "The Family", a rash of murders, a pretty solid twist, it's all here. The ending surprised me, but also didn't. It was the logical end to the chain of events, but I surprised the authors had the guts to take it there. So many authors would have swooped in with some clunky deus ex machina, and it was genuinely refreshing to see that not happen.

My one complaint is that the authors are clearly not from Vegas. The most obvious example is the repeated references to "Vegas PD". We don't call it that. Vegas police would simply identify themselves as "Metro". In fairness, the TV show CSI made the same mistake for years, and it doesn't detract from the enjoyment of the story.

The narrator was fine. For a normal detective noir story, he would have been great. He's got that perfect "Grizzled cop who's seen it all" voice. But he absolutely cannot do women's voice. It comes off as a bad falsetto. And since so many characters are women, this got to be a little grating.

An Amazing Indictment of the Lie of Heaven

Erin Louis does an amazing job breaking down why the Christian Heaven would be an absolute nightmare. Following Kat and her attempt to enjoy "Paradise", you get a real sense of the author's actual frustration with the theology of her youth. In this book, she manages to create a much more realistic picture of what the afterlife would be like under the purview of the Christian god than anything presented in any church. A fantastic journey from start to end.

I gave the narrator only 4 stars just because her voice took a bit to get used to, but overall she did a good job. The voice she chose for Jesus I found especially funny.

I devoured this book. I love this universe, and all of the characters in it are amazing. Without getting into spoiler territory, I will say that some interesting new connections are made, or rather discovered, with Alex and his past lives. Everyone gets their much deserved just desserts, leaving one with a very satisfied feel at the end. There are some nice sequel hooks throughout the story, so in addition to being a fantastic listen, it also has one wanting more.

Tess Irondale is fantastic as always. It's like she was given to us just to read Kay's work. Having narrated several of these books, one can tell that she is very comfortable with the story and characters, allowing the narrative to flow quite nicely.

This book is fantastic! The dialogue, plot, relationships, everything about this book is an absolute 10. Hayes is fantastic at weaving interlocking plot lines and dropping hints that payoff in amazing ways. We have a more, for lack of a better term, realistic version of a world with super powers. I couldn't put this down.

Landon is a superb narrator. She puts real, raw emotion into the text that makes it a joy to listen to.

My only complaint is that the sequel isn't out yet.

This story is very well crafted. It manages to check all of the boxes of cliche urban fantasy while somehow avoiding cliches. Unusual hair and eye color, except that it's not at all unusual for her kind which we spend the second half of the book with. Unusual name, except that she named herself based on a half heard radio broadcast. There's also a fantastic reveal about 3/4 through the book made me stop what I was doing and just marvel for a minute.

Maarleveld is the perfect narrator for Harper's books. Her accents and characterizations are spot on.

Great start to a series. Can't wait to get into it.

This book has a very unique concept. It also manages to avoid the need for a 'straight man' in the story by giving a history of the future in the prologue, which helps a lot with getting up to speed. The world building is intriguing, and I can't wait to find out more about the world outside of the prison setting of this first book. Unfortunately, the pace is a little too fast. It feels like we're only skimming the surface of these events without getting into the meat of them.

Meghan Kelly is an okay narrator. My biggest gripe is that her voices for all of the females (including our heroine) are shrill and grating. It's not helped by the fact that dialogue is WAY louder than narration. This book could have really benefited from a talented audio engineer.

All in all, worth the price of admission. With it's short run time, it's perfect for a road trip or a couple of days of commute. Just don't listen with headphones.

It's Every Group I've Ever Gamed With

This is a fantastic story for any regular D&D players out there. If you game with a group, you will love this because you will see your friends in these characters. The 'New Guy' whose never played before; the 'It's Just a Game' guy, who can't be bothered to take anything seriously; the 'Stop Having Fun' guy, who takes it way too seriously; the 'Peacemaker' guy, whose always trying to keep everyone from each other's throats; etc. The ending will throw you for a loop though.

The narration by Sleep is very well done. His range is very impressive, but the editing also helps a lot. When a character was wearing a mask, the voice sounded hollow and echoy, and when multiple characters speak at once, Sleep is edited over the top of himself using each characters' voice. Little things like that help with the immersion.

Solid Mystery, if a Bit Over the Top

This story is well told, taking us into the life of a troubled foster kid turned legal student. This book gets right into the meat of the mystery very quickly, as our hero is dragged into a political shit-storm of massive proportions. It does go a little overboard at times, what with hackers, private military, CIA, FBI, and the hero's "special brain". But over all, still a very fun ride.

Berman is okay as a narrator. He's a little bland. He doesn't bring anything interesting to the table, but also doesn't distract from the story itself. He is overwhelmingly okay.

Another great book in a genera that I've been calling 'Meta-Fantasy'. It's fantasy making fun of fantasy. We follow Cal, a new born Dungeon in a world where Adventurers delve into Dungeons for fun and profit. We also follow Dale, the goat farmer lucky enough to have found the new born dungeon. These two effectively introduce us to a world that might as well be straight from a D&D rule book. This world is exciting, fun, and funny.

Adam does a great job voicing the various characters. My only complaint, which is more the sound engineer's than Adam's fault, is that there is a pretty significant volume difference between the various voices. This can be a real problem, especially when wearing headphones. This recording could really have benefited from some audio balancing.

A fantastic story of what could have been. Despite being about Neanderthals and a Cro-Magnon, there are important themes about equality, bullying, and just wanting to fit in. All of the characters are very real and Ayla is one of the most sympathetic characters I've ever come across. The author does a great job introducing us to The Clan and all of the characters there in.

Even though most dialogue is done through gestures, Burr does a great job giving all the characters there own 'voice'. She also does a great job of ageing Ayla's 'voice'
