The adventures continue for Laura Ingalls and her family as they leave their little house in the Big Woods of Wisconsin and set out for Kansas. They travel for many days in their covered wagon until they find the best spot to build their little house on the prairie. Soon they are planting and plowing, hunting wild ducks and turkeys, and gathering grass for their cows. Sometimes pioneer life is hard, but Laura and her folks are always busy and happy in their new little house.

Veronica Fisher is devastated when her fiancé, Seth, is killed in an accident at work. Seth's friend, Jason Huyard, was with him and blames himself for Seth's death. Although Jason has never met Veronica, he feels as if he knows her because Seth talked about her constantly. After the accident, he can't seem to get Veronica out of his mind. Two months later, Veronica is cleaning the attic and comes across her mother's old hope chest.

Christiana Kurtz moves her bake stand to the local market, next to the woodcraft shop, which is run by Jeffrey Stoltzfus. Though their relationship starts off on bad footing, they eventually forge a friendship. When Christiana’s father makes a surprise visit to the market, he is upset to find that Jeffrey uses the building’s electricity to personalize his items. He tells Christiana that Jeffrey is too modern for her, and she’s forbidden from dating him. Christiana is crushed, but she knows she must obey her father.

Amelia Simpkins may be a great cook, and have a head for business, but sweet treats are out of her league and the owner of the Irish Blessings Cafe says it's because she adds the tart to the Sweet Shop's new dessert that Katie Chupp insists is only filled with lemony goodness. The two shop owners' constant bickering sends sparks flying through Abbott Creek's usual calm...and this is one mystery Katie wants no part of, but working for Mrs. Simpkins may put her in the middle - whether she intends to take sides...or not.
