Historia
Jess is a senior in college, ambitious but aimless, when she meets Josh. He’s a privileged preppy in chinos, ready to inherit the world. She’s not expecting to inherit anything. A year later, they’re both working at the same investment bank. And when Jess finds herself the sole Black woman on the floor, overlooked and underestimated, Josh shows up for her in surprising—if imperfect—ways. Before long, an unlikely friendship forms, tinged with undeniable chemistry. It gradually, and then suddenly, turns into an electrifying romance that shocks them both.

I read this book as the July Monthly Selection for @mochagirlsread. During the reading of this book, I had to remind myself over and over that BLACKNESS IS NOT A MONOLITH. This is probably someone's real life story (honestly, I probably know a few). This book follows Jess from her first day of getting her first "big girl" job at Goldman Sachs and the friendship and relationship that develops with her arch-nemesis, Josh. This book really makes you wonder if love is ever really enough to make a relationship work...and this one is an interracial one. I found Jess to be very annoying and insecure, but this was mainly because she was never secure in herself, her blackness or her place in the world. Her "everything's fine" mentality when her world was literally on fire made me want to jump through the book and shake her on several occasions. I do not like Josh. Full stop. I won't elaborate. I really hope that there is a sequel because I need to know how it (HOPEFULLY) ends.

I can't begin to say how much I loved this book! The title of this book made me think I was learning about Evelyn's seven husbands, but Evelyn herself was truly the star of the show. I laughed, cried and fought the air over the course of listening. 5 stars all around.

I read this as @mochagirlsread's April BOTM. I will be honest and say that I bought this as an audiobook (because, poetry) with no other background on the work at all. I struggled through it until the light bulb went off! Pull out your Bible!
This book of poetry is a telling of the Gospel of Luke through the first 8 chapters. The poetry weaves the Scripture through a lens of that I as a black woman could fully relate to and imagine in ways that I didn't think about with the text alone. I love that there is a love of people and community through these words. This is a book that I will pick up again and also get into some of his other works.

Historia
All is not well in the city that never sleeps. Even though the avatars of New York City have temporarily managed to stop the Woman in White from invading—and destroying the entire universe in the process—the mysterious capital "E" Enemy has more subtle powers at her disposal. A new candidate for mayor wielding the populist rhetoric of gentrification, xenophobia, and "law and order" may have what it takes to change the very nature of New York itself and take it down from the inside.

Left wanting more
Revisado: 03-31-23
I know this was supposed to be a trilogy but cut down to 2 books....and it seems that way. I loved the book and the performance but the ending felt rushed to me. I hope these characters and more cities can be revisited at a later date. *SPOILER ALERT* I felt upset when the enemy just decided to leave them alone. We did all this for what?!

Historia
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

Plot Twist
Revisado: 03-15-23
I'm going to be honest. At first this boom should have been titled "The Neverending Wedding." I'm glad I kept listening. The bulk of the characters were INSUFFERABLE until I really got into the meat of the story. Every time I thought I knew who the victim and the killer was, another twist was thrown in. I really enjoyed it.

Touré Wallace and Niomi Spencer were close friends at Finley College, the prestigious HBCU they attended. The attraction that simmered between them every semester was a question they never got to ask or answer before soaring ambitions launched them to opposite corners of the world. Both chased their dreams of grit and glamor as high-profile journalists. They got it all...except a shot at being more than friends. Years later, Touré is an award-winning investigative journalist and Niomi is America's most popular morning-show host, but they both feel like something’s missing.

I had no idea what was in store for me with this book, but I was thoroughly entertained. Jael stopped me in my tracks! As a black woman relearning my relationship with God outside the church walls, this book called to mind do many thoughts I had about churchy people and lessons that should be unlearned. Great read.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

interesting listen
Revisado: 02-15-23
As soon as this book was announced, I knew that I was going to read it. I listened to the audiobook, which was a little over 15 hours long. This book was split into 3 parts, and to me, it seems like they were mini books.
Part 1: My thoughts throughout were "how incredibly sad." I know that therapy just recently became an okay thing for people to do, but I was so sad that at least grief counseling wasn't something that was at least SUGGESTED for these babies after losing Princess Di. The whole family needs therapy, but that isn't something i picked up on until part 2. Wi
Part 2: I was incredibly annoyed at this part of the book...at him and the monarchy. This man already had no coping skills and no real support as a child. He grew up to be a young man with no guidance and making dumb mistakes over and over. Again....where was the therapy? The paparazzi element to this story annoys me to no end because this is how his mother died. No one tried to protect this whole family from this was VERY irritating to me.
Part 3: THIS is the part i was waiting for. there is therapy here (thank God!!). I feel glad that with Megan, it seems like this is as happy as he has been since his mother was alive. I hate that they were banished for not wanting to accept racism and bullying as the status quo.

Historia
There may be no tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big challenges, but Michelle Obama believes that we can all locate and lean on a set of tools to help us better navigate change and remain steady within flux. In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with listeners, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much?

Revisado: 12-09-22
It took me 3 tries to get through this story just to make sure I was understanding. Once I sat still, I understood. This is a great story about sister....twins...and the differences between them and the love it takes to get through things. I am a Bahni Turpin fan and I love ANYTHING she narrates. makes the story much more enjoyable.
