Mama Ruby… Wow
Revisado: 03-28-25
This was quite a unique book. I wasn’t sure what to think one page to the next. The narrator did pretty good being that he has so many characters to bring in the story. Mama Ruby was strange… in between two worlds.

Great suspense
Revisado: 01-15-25
Loved the suspense! Storyline was really good and held my attention. Being from the south I thought the characters other than Ruth sounded like they were from up state New York/northern. The southern accent was not there for me, however I will be listening for more books read by this narrator and written by the author!

This story was awesome! The narration was amazing! The storyline was realistic and challenged the thought patterns of many, when “bad” things happen… and God’s hand in it. I enjoyed the narration! Kept me tuned in.

Revisado: 09-17-24
Definitely a page turner. I LOVE the voice of THE Bahnj Turpin so that was one of my reasons for getting the book. I thought the plot was great and the story line throughout was intriguing and held me in enough suspense to keep me coming back! I don’t think you’ll be disappointed at all.

Tugs at your heartstrings! Beautiful!
Revisado: 04-06-24
★★★★★!!! I had no idea what to expect from this book. It was written years ago as the reference to “the blogs” tells us so. However!!!! You will NOT be disappointed!!!! This was a book full of surprises, heartbreaking moments and yet has the best story of redemption, that I’ve read in a long time! I found myself saying out loud “oh my goodness!” multiple times or just closing my eyes in heartbreak. It is worth the read. Life lessons and faith are apart of this story… that we can all apply. The author did a great job with providing details about certain things, i.e. health conditions. It made it believable and personal for the reader/listener. I can’t say enough about this narrator as she had done a great job as well!!! I am throughly impressed by this author and narrator.

Homesick- Southern Comfort indeed
Revisado: 04-02-24
Being from the south I appreciated the truth behind the hearts of the people portrayed in this book. This book sucked me in but not immediately. I wasn’t sure how I’d like it due to the narrator’s voice. I thought there was no way this narrator could walk me through the heart of the south as described in the book description. But boy was I wrong! Because the main character was from NY, then moving to find her roots in the south… her voice and what we call a “proper English” accent in the south actually wooed me. It made listening to the book more believable because indeed she did not speak as they did in SC. I was able to easily visualize what she saw/described - especially the beautiful land and “Black River”. I was able to appreciate the author’s effort to describe the heart of the south and the heart of one from the north. Many may not think it’s a real thing, but truly the south can swoon you and you be unaware it is taking place! The heartache of family history described here before and after Emancipation still haunts the south today, so the backstory being told through the main character’s ancestor’s eyes was a wonderful and powerful, unexpected part of the book. Taking true landmarks in Georgetown, SC and meshing the history with her own true family history as stated in the epilogue made the book worth a listen even more. The family aspect really hit home for me, especially the wise, sweet but strong almost 100 yr old grandmother! Reminded me of my own grandmother… it all reminded me of home.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 03-20-24
What a story of triumph! I had no idea this was s a true story until well into the book. Though I enjoyed this story/memoir, one should be aware of the heavy profanity in this true story. The author holds nothing back and though that is certainly no indictment against her (for this is HER story) it should be known to those who prefer books that are not note so heavily laden with profanity. You would be surprise how many people prefer not to listen or read books like this but this story will forever be in my heart. Cupcake took me with her on her life’s journey and I am better bc of that.

A lot of characters, but great suspense.
Revisado: 01-13-24
I liked the book. I enjoyed the suspense of who the killer was. I went back and forth of who it could have been. The narrator did okay. I did begin getting all of the characters mixed up towards in the middle of the book. Personally, there were a lot of characters to remember who was who. I felt like I should have written out a chart of who was who just to reference while listening. This issue took away from the story a bit.
I try to be careful when choosing books here but there’s no way of knowing what kind of material is in the book, i.e., heavy profanity, sexually explicit material, graphic descriptions. This book did not have sexually explicit material at all however it is ladened with profanity and graphic material. If you do not care to listen to such material then beware. If these things do not bother you, then have at it! (Smile) This author is superb at describing the situations throughout the book. It was easy to visualize the scenes in my mind. I loved the way he started off the scenes that led up to a murder scene. This could be a great movie.
