Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

Overrated romance masked as fantasy
Revisado: 11-16-23
The story could be good if not for all the childish romance. It’s like every sentence has to have some type of horny cliche. Instead of focusing on world-building typically seen in a novel in the “fantasy” genre, it focuses on never-ending teenage cringy romance. It would be fine if it wasn’t so overwhelming and forced, instead of having it progress per normal in a story, it takes control of the entire narrative.

Disappointing
Revisado: 06-27-23
Laborious, disappointing, does not move storyline forward. More of a book to develop an alternate world than develop a storyline. Needs editors to remove extraneous detail that detracts and bores. If any following books in this line are similar will not purchase.

Historia
The tale begins in Dark Age Britain, a land where Arthur has been banished and Merlin has disappeared, where a child-king sits unprotected on the throne, where religion vies with magic for the souls of the people. It is to this desperate land that Arthur returns, a man at once utterly human and truly heroic: a man of honor, loyalty, and amazing valor; a man who loves Guinevere more passionately than he should; a man whose life is at once tragic and triumphant.

Revisado: 06-19-19
Wow what a slug working through this book. Slow, excruciatingly so. Then is never get's better. Some reviewers say make it through first several hours but even at the 7 hour mark...ugh! Not anything like the Sharpe's series. It's a pity.

Historia
The rise to global predominance of Western civilization is the single most important historical phenomenon of the past five hundred years. All over the world, an astonishing proportion of people now work for Western-style companies, study at Western-style universities, vote for Western-style governments, take Western medicines, wear Western clothes, and even work Western hours. Yet six hundred years ago the petty kingdoms of Western Europe seemed unlikely to achieve much more than perpetual internecine warfare. It was Ming China or Ottoman Turkey that had the look of world civilizations.

Get something else
Revisado: 03-24-16
This seems to be more of an editorial than biography. The author portrayed Churchill as a radical progressive conservative liberal and changed this view as quickly as you can read this review. I found myself doubting the authenticity of the book and pondering the authors agenda.

Great for insomnia
Revisado: 02-17-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Good question. I expect others will like it but just too slow and to calm of a delivery.
What was most disappointing about Paolo Bacigalupi’s story?
Narration
What didn’t you like about Almarie Guerra’s performance?
Monotone, slow delivery, would be great for other types of books.
Any additional comments?
The book may be better than my review but I just could not get into it due to a soft voice almost monotone narrator. Could not finish. Listened to while running an nearly fell asleep

Midnight Jesus shares fascinating, bizarre, and sometimes hilarious true-life stories of everyday people looking for hope in their darkest hours. Poignant and unpretentious, Jamie paints beauty where at times it seems none exists - from skating rinks and bars to late-night highways and lonely apartments, broken churches and run-down trailer parks, jail cells, bridge rails, ERs, psych wards, and that place over the levee where God laughs and walks through the cool, dark night.
