Rest and relaxation—that’s what Nita Callahan thinks she’s going to get when she and her partner-wizard Kit Rodriguez go on a “cultural exchange” program. But nothing about wizardry—not even vacation—is ever quite that simple!

Hectic holiday
Revisado: 01-14-22
Crazy stuff can happen even on vacation, as is discovered by two groups of wizards participating in a sort of foreign exchange program. I love seeing more of Kit’s sister, Carmella. She’s a great character. And we meet some wizards of other species that, thankfully, will be sticking around for the next book.

While Nita Callahan grieves over her mother’s death, Kit Rodriguez tackles a challenge as dangerous as it is strange: Rescue a young wizard who has vanished on his first assignment. Another excellent entry*
Revisado: 01-13-22
A good half of this book deals with depression. Nita and her family show different presentations of depression that I didn’t understand the first time I read this book in middle school. But now, having been dealing with depression for a while myself, I think the representation was handled well.
The other half of the book sees Kit attempting to communicate with an autistic child. People with a modern knowledge of autism, especially those who know autistic people and possibly autistic people themselves, may feel uncomfortable with this version of the book. This was first published in 2002, and we’ve learned a lot more about autism since then. This book received some major rewrites in the New Millennium Edition, and it might be a good idea to check out that version as well.
Christina Moore’s performance was stellar, as always. I never get tired of her narration and she has a beautiful speaking voice.

Historia
Still recovering from an overly eventful vacation in Ireland, teenage wizard Nita Callahan is looking forward to some peace and quiet in her suburban New York home. Instead, her close friend Kit seems to be acting a little weird, and Nita keeps running into problems for which wizardry either isn’t the answer or else it’s the wrong one. How do you fix what can’t be fixed? Only the Transcendent Pig knows, and it’s not telling.

The start of big changes.
Revisado: 01-13-22
Big changes start happening in this book for Nita and Kit, as well as their families, changes that continue to evolve in the next several books. This one covers some pretty heavy topics: life, death, dealing with a terminal illness. I love that we start seeing more of Ponch in this book. The voice Christina Moore does for him is, quite frankly, adorable, and he is the goodest boy.

Historia
Young wizards Nita and Kit face their most terrifying challenge yet: Nita’s little sister, Dairine. Not only is Dairine far too smart for a ten-year-old, she also recently has become a wizard, and worse yet, a wizard with almost limitless power. When Dairine’s computerized wizard’s manual glibly sends her off on her novice adventure—her Ordeal—Kit and Nita end up chasing her across the galaxy, trying to catch up with Dairine before she gets into trouble so deep that not even her brains can rescue her.

An exciting POV shift.
Revisado: 01-07-22
Nita's sister gets in on the action when she's suddenly able to understand the Wizard's Oath page in Nita's manual. The changed wording of the Oath took me a bit by surprise. I wonder if the wording evolves throughout different times and cultures? And something Nita thinks in regards to her father in the second book has a small payout as Harry is allowed to see a translated version of the Oath and doesn't jump at the chance to take it.
The alternating POV between Ni\ta and Dairine can be a little jarring sometimes, until you get used to it, but getting to hear Dairine's inner thoughts is very interesting, as we learn what drives her. Not one of my favorite books in the series as Dairine can be a little tiring sometimes, but still a good story.
As always, Christina Moore is a joy to listen to.

Revisado: 01-05-22
This book was my introduction to this series, way back in the early 200s, and was my favorite in the series until I read Games Wizards Play. It’s still a very close second. As always, Christina Moore’s voice is a delight to listen to.

First installment in my favorite wizardry series
Revisado: 01-04-22
I first encountered this series, much like Nita with her manual, at my local library, when I found a copy of Deep Wizardry on audio cassettes. I have since listened to the series many times, and it’s still one of my favorite series. Diane Duane has a way with words that would definitely make her a powerful wizard, and Christina Moore has a deep, steady voice that is a delight to listen to.

Historia
Fiver could sense danger. Something terrible was going to happen to the warren; he felt sure of it. They had to leave immediately. So begins a long and perilous journey of survival for a small band of rabbits. As the rabbits skirt danger at every turn, we become acquainted with the band, its humorous characters, and its compelling culture, complete with its own folk history and mythos. Fiver’s vision finally leads them to Watership Down, an upland meadow. But here they face their most difficult challenges of all.

Watership Down had been my favorite novel for the last 16 years. Despite that, I’ve never searched out an audiobook version before now. I’m glad I found this in one of Audible’s recent sales. Peter Capaldi is now among my favorite narrators. He has a pleasant voice and does character voices really well.

Historia
Esther Gold loves Halloween more than anything in the world. So she is determined to go trick-or-treating again this year despite the fact that her parents think she is officially too old. Esther has it all planned out, from her costume to her candy-collecting strategy. But when the night rolls around, something feels...off. No one is answering their door. The moon is an unnatural shade of orange. Strange children wander the streets, wearing creepy costumes that might not be costumes at all.

Wonderful story and excellent narration.
Revisado: 07-29-21
This was a fun story by a wonderful writer! I was already familiar with Joseph Fink’s writing from the podcast Welcome to Night Vale, and I was interested in seeing what he could do with a story unrelated to Night Vale. Needless to say, it was a fun, well-written story. Definitely recommend.
I was previously familiar with Kevin R. Free’s voice talents, also from Night Vale. I only recently learned that he narrates audiobooks and this is the first of his narrations I’ve listened to. He has a pleasant voice and actually sounds like he enjoys narrating. I’ll definitely be checking out more books read by him in the future.

Historia
England is overrun by dragons of all shapes and sizes. Most people are blissfully unaware of them and the Pendragon Treaty that keeps the peace between human and dragon kind. Only those born with preternatural hearing, like Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet are able to hear and converse with dragonkind.

An exciting variation on a classic!
Revisado: 09-10-20
Disclaimer: I received this book as a free review copy from the narrator. Thank you very much.
The story:This book follows part of the basic plot of Pride and Prejudice as the synopsis suggests, however there are dragons living in England; many lesser dragons live wild while some have imprinted on a human at hatching and live with them. Great efforts are made to make sure that every great dragon (the ones powerful enough to ravage human society) that hatches imprints on a human keeper according to the agreement made between humans and dragons after a great war. They also strive to hide the existence of dragons from the humans that cannot hear them for fear that they will try to kill the dragons and reignite the fighting. The main conflict of this first book begins when the egg of one of the major dragons, a fair drake, is stolen from its future keeper Fitzwilliam Darcy and he enlists the help of POV character Elizabeth Bennet (handler of a wyvern) and her dragon to help find it.
I quite liked this book and look forward to the next one in the series. It's well written and the characters have a decent amount of depth to them. The addition of dragons to a classic story like Pride and Prejudice makes for a very interesting tale. If you like dragon stories I highly recommend checking this out. If you're a fan of Pride and Prejudice it wouldn't hurt to give this story a try.
The narrator: Benjamin Fife is a joy to listen to. This was my first time being exposed to his narration and I'm glad I've given it a chance. Most of his character voices are perfect (the only ones I didn't care for were the young children he voiced at the beginning of the book). I look forward to his narration of the remainder of the books in this series!
