Historia
Girt Nation introduces Alfred Deakin, the Liberal necromancer whose dead advisors made Australia a better place to live, and Banjo Paterson, the jihadist who called on God and the Prophet to drive the Australian infidels from the Sudan ‘like sand before the gale’. And meet Catherine Helen Spence, the feminist polymath who envisaged a utopian future of free contraceptives, easy divorce and immigration restrictions to prevent the ‘Chinese coming to destroy all we have struggled for’!

Another interesting look at Australian History
Revisado: 12-05-21
I have listened to the two previous "girts" and enjoyed them both. I was not disappointed with this - but does contain a bit of strong language . Not enough to put you off and it does represent the era which this book studies, Really good to put historical and literary figures in perspective,

Supernatural "whodunnit"
Revisado: 07-27-16
Overall the story line and characterisations were good and the book kept my attention. The narrator had a large cast of characters to portray and did a competent job apart from the English accent which varied from Australian to Cockney. Worth a read.

Space warfare with a female lead.
Revisado: 04-27-16
Well-written "shoot up the bad guys in space." Oh, and fight the bad guys on your side as well. A few stereotyped characters, but for the first time in a long while I read about some different aliens that actually made sense - if aliens can make sense. Perhaps I meant that these aliens were different from the usual BEMs and were consistent in their actions in the scenario the author set up. Would consider more in the series.

Pleasantly surprised by this. The scenario was fairly familiar, but the authors (and narrators) managed to squeeze something new out of it. I will certainly buy the rest of the series.

Pastiche of Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy plus?
Revisado: 11-26-15
The author has borrowed from the "Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy", "Star wars" with a touch of "The stainless steel rat" in an attempt to be witty. Unfortunately he didn't succeed. One or two lighter moments didn't lift this from the mediocre. If you want humour (and humorous Sci Fi is notoriously difficult to write) I suggest you go back to HHGTTG, Harry Harrison or Eric Frank Russell. Also look at the "Red Dwarf" series or some of John Scalzi's work. I very nearly asked for a refund on this, but I went through to the end. The narrator does a good job with some poor material.

Space opera version of lord of the flies?
Revisado: 10-22-15
I nearly didn't buy this book due to its length. So glad I did. Has some well worn themes but placed in unusual settings. It is a fascinating mix of rebel underground versus the (hereditary) ruling classes, slaves versus despotic rulers and a winnowing out of the substandard children of the nobility. There are so many hints of classic SF here, but it is no way plagiaristic. Characters are built up carefully and you can empathize or entirely dislike them, but you care about what happens to them. Will look for a follow up.

But the arachnid ET hasn't come aboard a rowboat with the Pope and Stephen Hawking (although His Holiness does request an audience later). Landing at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, the spacefarer, Hollus, asks to compare notes on mass extinctions with resident dino-scientist Thomas Jericho.

I wondered about buying this book, but was glad I did. As a Science Teacher I have studied a fair bit of this subject and thought that the author did a good job of presenting the various aspects of evolution.
Good plot, well written and some different characters made this an enjoyable book.

Even in Empire City, a town where weird science is the hope for tomorrow, it's hard for a robot to make his way. It's even harder for a robot named Mack Megaton, a hulking machine designed to bring mankind to its knees. But Mack's not interested in world domination. He's just a bot trying to get by, trying to demonstrate that he isn't just an automated smashing machine, and to earn his citizenship in the process. It should be as easy as crushing a tank for Mack, but some bots just cant catch a break.

Definitely not Asimov
Revisado: 07-09-15
The robot "hero" certainly doesn't follow Asimov's three laws of robotics and is all the better for it. A novel premise and a different alternate universe. I wavered on initial purchase, but really enjoyed the book.

Quirky detective story
Revisado: 05-25-15
This reminded me of some of the Ed McBain 87th precinct books - perhaps because of the weather scenes. I didn't like the narrator at first then I grew into his performance. The lead detective was an interesting character. I quite liked the book, but if there was a series I probably wouldn't buy any more.
