Historia
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

YA Book that feels like Harry Potter copy.
Revisado: 03-08-24
Before I spent a credit on this book, I read many reviews. Commonly people said it felt like two different books and they either loved the first half and hated the second, or vice versa. I just felt it was suited to a YA audience and maybe it is tagged that way and I missed it, so my bad. Not my thing. I love long books generally and all sorts of genres. So this is a rare dislike.

Too dates. Too predictable. Worse than a Hallmark movie. Did not like the characters. Just verbal sludge. No depth. The blurb was completely misleading.

Not a developed story
Revisado: 12-15-23
Female wolf of wall street with no likeable characters. Orgy of drugs, alcoholism, and so much judgemental classification of the rest of the world. No enjoyable characters. Unrealistic. With tiny moralistic ending. So sad to have used a credit on this. Even all the free books have been better quality.

Perfection.
Revisado: 05-02-23
I read all the reviews before picking this, and I worried it would drag, but it didn’t for me at all. This author is so original. Entirely unpredictable, and captures the way we mothers can let guilt tear us apart at all stages of our child’s development. Superb!

Historia
It was four o'clock in the morning. A young woman pushed through the hospital doors. Staff would later say they thought the woman was a new mother, returning to her child - and in a way, she was. She walked into the nursery, where a baby girl lay sleeping. The infant didn't wake when the woman placed her gently in the shopping bag she had brought with her. There is CCTV footage of what happened next, and most Australians would have seen it, either on the internet or the news.

It’s torture waiting for monthly credits even when I purchase 3 extra credits a month. I don’t usually find my favourites in the plus catalog. The algorithm seems to always suggest I use my credits on basic variations of similar stories. I love complexity and truth. One of my very top reads in the last 12 months.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Favourite Book In The Last 12 Months
Revisado: 09-02-22
It takes me so long and sample so many books before I spend my Audible credits. Only one other book have I rated all 5’s and I don’t listen to any particular genre. And I rarely find I love top rated books. Perhaps it’s because my own son rescued an octopus when we lived on the beach in New Zealand and our small family of 3 learned all about the creatures. Or because in high school I lived in the Pacific Northwest. Or because I too lost my son when he was 18. Or because Cameron’s feelings of brokenness were just so relatable. But by far Marcelles was my favourite character. Despite all of this, I didn’t warm to it immediately but yeah, I listened to the whole thing in one go. Wouldn’t really change a thing.

Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: What does it mean to love?

Just Enjoyable Storytelling
Revisado: 07-07-22
I kept expecting the very worst all the way through the book. While not a “happy” story I felt it touched on many complex themes through very simple techniques. Masterful. And the very worst I feared all the way through never happened.

Historia
Sixteen year-old Katya Spivak is out for a walk on the gracious streets of Bayhead Harbor with her two summer babysitting charges when she's approached by silver-haired, elegant Marcus Kidder. At first, his interest in her seems harmless, even pleasant, like his name - a sort of gentle joke. His beautiful home, the children's books that he's written, his classical music, the marvelous art in his study, his lavish presents to her. But by degrees, almost imperceptibly, something changes.

My First Joyce Carol Oats
Revisado: 07-04-22
This little novella was my first exposure to this author. Yes, it is dark and disturbing, but very well written. Left me with so many questions. I’m excited to find a new author with over 40 titles to explore. Sadly Audible only had an abridged version of the next book by this author I wanted to explore. She is not well represented on this platform. Such a shame.
