This brought back many memories of my conservative life growing up during the 50’s about an hour up the coast from Coronado, when I was is college in 1967.
I was a real California Girl, who water skied, with long blond hair, parted in the middle, the first to wear bell bottoms, big belts & boots to the Quad where the “cool kids” hung out😬

Patrick a high school friend enlisted and was a chopper pilot in the Green Berets and Allen, a neighbor was a chopper pilot also. Others, who were Christian’s became Conscientious Objectors and 1 fled to Canada. Some had hilarious stories about their failed attempts to dodge the draft.

It was turbulent & confusing time to be on a college campus. I thought I was mature for my age, having 2 older sisters but I was still a child trying to balance support of Patrick’s choice & others who chose not to serve. This was complicated by the violence of the Watts Riots, Kent State and the assignations of our Beloved Leaders and compounded by my abhorrence of our Government’s continued support for the war.

Our life went on, like Frankie’s parents, and though we worried and prayed for our Soldiers, we had no idea of the reality on the ground.

Kristin gives us a glimpse, interspersed with stories of touching deep friendships, humor, compassion, and perfect musical choices, and yes horror.

It was a time, just like the present, to not be apolitical and my continued patriotic duty is to VOTE.

I devoured The Nightingale a few years ago and now I’m deciding which of her books to listen to now.

In short, I loved this book for many reasons. The author obviously knows about Art & Paris and researched the Nazi occupation and the theft of art owned by the Jewish people, and the destruction of art the Nazis deemed degenerate. Historical drama is my genre but I’m not usually drawn to this specific subject matter because I find it depressing, so I’m not sure what drew me to download it from Amazon to read , it just spoke to me, & I’m glad I did. The writer shows great sensitivity and romance in his character development except, of course, for those who are unworthy. I couldn’t wait for it to come to Audible and snapped it up immediately and I loved the read but the narrator brought it to life way better than my imagination. I’m looking forward to the sequel, so please hurry Mr. Grubman!
