Historia
Today the names of H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, August Derleth, and Clark Ashton Smith, all regular contributors to the pulp magazine Weird Tales during the first half of the twentieth century, are recognizable even to casual readers and listeners of the bizarre and fantastic. And yet despite being more popular than them all during the golden era of genre pulp fiction, there is another author whose name and work have fallen into obscurity: Seabury Quinn. Quinn's short stories were featured in well more than half of Weird Tales's original publication run.

This May be Au revior for Me
Revisado: 12-16-24
I loved, loved, loved Vol One. I skipped V Two because there was different narrator. I passed on Vol Three due to the reviews of being extremely racist.
Vol Four, is probably just a racist as Vol Three, which I found annoying. My biggest issues with this volume are 1) with a few exceptions, all the stories felt overly long; and 2) a majority of the stories were spent on the backstory/legend/mythos/history of the afflicted person(s). Really you could jump to the last 10 mins of any of these stories and get your Jules de Gradin fix. I do understand the time period these were written in but in this volume, to me, the stories were overly and unnecessarily descriptive. I felt none of things with Vol One.

Zombie Apocalypse Here I Come!
Revisado: 07-21-22
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. Not only is it the first book in my library that I never fast forwarded once but I had to rewind many times because my mind would start to daydream or expound on something just stated and I had to refocus so I wouldn't miss anything. If only my college classes had been this interesting and entertaining.

Zombies! Zombies! Zombies! is the darkest, the living-deadliest, scariest - and dare we say most tasteful - collection of zombie stories ever assembled. It's so good, it's a no-brainer. There is never a dull moment in the world of zombies. They are superstars of horror, and they are everywhere, storming the world of print and visual media. Their endless march will never be stopped. It's the Zombie Zeitgeist! Now, with his wide sweep of knowledge and keen eye for great storytelling, Otto Penzler offers a remarkable catalog of zombie literature.

A Guide to Haitian Zombies
Revisado: 06-30-22
The narration was excellent and the stories were enjoyable. The reasons I gave 3 stars overall are the following: 1) primarily about Haitian zombies, 2) got burned out on all the Haitian zombie stories, 3) most of the stories, it seemed to me, where from the 1920-1950s and 4) the last story is actually book length it's chapters 159-184, over 6 hours!!!!! It was struggle to finish the last story since I wasn't expecting a book length story and I kept wondering will this ever end. For 1 credit, it is worth it. I just hope my warning about the last story helps you start out listening in a different mindset than I had when I entered into it.

Ghosts, specters, wraiths.... Restless undead spirits wail beneath the full moon and reach out for you from the swirling mists. The pain and loneliness of death drives them to seek the one thing they cannot have - the spark of life within your soul.... Scare Street presents volumes seven through nine of Terror in the Shadows, gathered into one spine-tingling tome. More than 30 stories of supernatural fear and suspense lurk with this macabre collection. Each one packed with a ghoulish assortment of creatures from beyond the grave.

Things That Make You Go Hm...
Revisado: 12-09-21
I really loved volumes 1-3 and 14. Volumes 4-9 left me confused. I'm rating two books at the same time since I listened to them back to back. A majority of the stories felt unfinished, fell flat or lacked something. Ironically the stories weren't bad but when I got to the end of the story a LOT of them received a reaction of: "That's it?"or "What?" A few of the stories threw in a random detail that went no where. It was like an introduction to horror writing. I'm game to try other volumes.

We decided upon the shopping list theme for this particular volume of horror short stories as an antithesis to those wildly successful writers (they know who they are) of whom it is often said "we would read their shopping list if they published it!" Well, we have given 21 of the hottest new horror authors in the independent scene the unique opportunity to have their own shopping lists listened to by you - along with their most terrifying tales, of course!

Thouroughly Enjoyable!
Revisado: 12-09-21
I liked almost all the stories. The author's shopping list as a prologue to their story was fun and different. I was concerned I wouldn't be able to tolerate the narrator because I couldn't stand his introduction but he grew on me. My only suggestion for Gareth is to stop doing American Southern accents, very bad. I have already listened to this anthology twice.

Michael Pollan, known for his best-selling nonfiction audio, including The Omnivores Dilemma and How to Change Your Mind, conceived and wrote Caffeine: How Caffeine Created the Modern World as an Audible Original. In this controversial and exciting listen, Pollan explores caffeine’s power as the most-used drug in the world - and the only one we give to children (in soda pop) as a treat.

Historia
The Grand Hotel is a horror novel by esteemed best-selling author Scott Kenemore ( Zombie, Ohio) that takes the reader on a thrilling ride through an interconnected series of stories narrated by the desk clerk and the residents of the hotel itself. And while it is not known whether or not the desk clerk is actually the devil incarnate, it is strange that so many visitors who come for a tour of the hotel have a way of never leaving.

Took Me By Surprise
Revisado: 08-24-21
Definitely not what I expected but it made me listen all the way to the end. The stories and mini analysis after each were thought provoking and the ending interesting. The best thing about the book was the narration, I will keep an ear out for Christian Rummel.

Historia
This statement was true when H. P. Lovecraft first wrote it at the beginning of the twentieth century, and it remains true at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The only thing that has changed is what is unknown. With each passing year, science, technology, and the march of time shine light into the craggy corners of the universe, making the fears of an earlier generation seem quaint. But this light creates its own shadows. The Best Horror of the Year, edited by Ellen Datlow, chronicles these shifting shadows.

Good Enough for my Commute
Revisado: 08-06-21
So far this is my least favorite volume and only the last story was memorable. The narration is hit or miss. When Mark starts speaking loudly I think of a failed thespian, how he narrates distracts from some of the stories. Technically these stories belong under the horror genre but they don't feel like horror (if that makes any sense).

Historia
Darkness, both literal and psychological, holds its own unique fascination. Despite our fears, or perhaps because of them, listeners have always been drawn to tales of death, terror, madness, and the supernatural, and no more so than today when a wildly imaginative new generation of dark dreamers is carrying on in the tradition of Poe and Lovecraft and King, crafting exquisitely disturbing literary nightmares that gaze without flinching into the abyss - and linger in the mind long after.

Meh
Revisado: 04-30-21
A largely forgettable collection. This is the third volume I've listened to and the book's title is clearly subjective. For me, I have noticed after listening to 3 volumes so far, they save the best story for last and the stories seem to get better towards the end. The narration was great but couldn't stop me from fast forwarding or out right abandoning 3-4 stories. I will check out the other volumes; each volume has a few gems and it's great for my commute.

The Final Story is Worth Getting This Book
Revisado: 04-14-21
Overall the stories were meh. There weren't as many stories as you'd think because half of them spanned 2 chapters. The last 2 chapters [final story] were the best and stayed with me. The strength of that story alone is why I would recommend this book.
