Historia
This stunning follow-up to Ellen Kushner's cult-classic novel Swordspoint is set in the same world of labyrinthine intrigue, where sharp swords and even sharper wits rule. Against a rich tapestry of artists and aristocrats, students, strumpets, and spies, a gentleman and a scholar will find themselves playing out an ancient drama destined to explode their society's smug view of itself - and reveal that sometimes the best price of uncovering history is being forced to repeat it....

world building, characters
Revisado: 01-12-25
Highly thought through and worked, but overly complicated, too many characters too many personalities, too much complexity. Everything well worked, but it’s like having 1000 complicated dishes, set at the dining table. And knowing you can’t appreciate each one and ending up, feeling overwhelmed and a bit unwell! Don’t feel like the Story arc was entirely well balanced, and a bit frustrating not to be able to appreciate each dish because another one arrives too quickly…

Loved this story, one of my favorites. And being able to hear Horatio stammer was a total delight!
Said all I had to say, but apparently there is a 15 word minimum so I am continuing. Surely this is more than adequate!

But every kind of animal, including humans, is enclosed within its own unique sensory bubble, perceiving but a tiny sliver of our immense world. In An Immense World, Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent, waves of electromagnetism, and pulses of pressure that surround us.

Historia
Werner Herzog was born in September 1942 in Munich, Germany, at a turning point in the Second World War. Soon Germany would be defeated and a new world would have to be made out the rubble and horrors of the war. Fleeing the Allied bombing raids, Herzog’s mother took him and his older brother to a remote, rustic part of Bavaria where he would spend much of his childhood hungry, without running water, in deep poverty. It was there, as the new postwar order was emerging, that one of the most visionary filmmakers of the next seven decades was formed.

Historia
Although T. E. Lawrence, commonly known as "Lawrence of Arabia’, died in 1935, the story of his life has captured the imagination of succeeding generations. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is a monumental work in which he chronicles his role in leading the Arab Revolt against the Turks during the First World War. A reluctant leader, and wracked by guilt at the duplicity of the British, Lawrence nevertheless threw himself into his role, suffering the blistering desert conditions and masterminding military campaigns which culminated in the triumphant march of the Arabs into Damascus.

Loved it!
Revisado: 01-01-23
The perfect walkabout book! It was such a delight to get to know Darwin, listen to his observations and commentary: enthusiastic, perceptive, insightful, and a fascinating look at what the world looked like to someone like him. The 19th century perception of the beginning of colonization and change. Liked him as a person and admired his courage, fortitude. endless curiosity and amazing energy throughout grueling, physically, challenging experience. Not a sit-down -and listen to every word, experience, but to have Darwins journal read to you with feeling by a good reader was a pleasure.

Historia
Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was an intrepid explorer and the most famous scientist of his age. His restless life was packed with adventure and discovery, whether climbing the highest volcanoes in the world or racing through anthrax-infested Siberia. He came up with a radical vision of nature, that it was a complex and interconnected global force and did not exist for man's use alone. Ironically, his ideas have become so accepted and widespread that he has been nearly forgotten.

This was a delight to listen to, full of joy, adventures, profound insights, and an front seat to one of the more remarkable periods of history and how wars, alliances, revolutions impacted travel, funding, access. Historia
When the dashing Jack Carstares is unfairly accused of cheating at cards, he leaves the country in disgrace. Returning some years later disguised as a highwayman, his reappearance heralds a dramatic chain of events that includes a Duke, a damsel, a duel, and not one, but two kidnappings. Written when she was just 17, The Black Moth was Heyer’s first novel, but it bears many of the hallmarks of her later romances, being vivid, witty, and peppered with historical insight.

Delightful
Revisado: 03-04-20
re-read (does that count when you've previously read & are now listening?) These Old Shades & really enjoyed it. Thought the voices & expressiveness was well done. So of course I had to read the PreQuel (obvious, but have never seen it formally acknowledged) This is the first of a trilogy, BM/TOS/Devil's Cub. It was nice to be reminded how Avon's bad reputation was honoroubly obtained--he was pretty dreadful. Loved seeing everyone again. And really remarkable that this was Georgette's first! Then went back & re-listened to These Old Shades again. Then went on to listen to Devil's Cub, a crushing disappointment, as the reader was dreadful & DC is one of my favorite GHs. I soldiered through, but please, a nasal voice is so not Vidal. It was excruciating....
