A Chore I Gave Up On

Vance is great as usual and Barker does occasionally create enchanting prose. I would also add that some of the villains are incredibly unique and captivating. However, these positives can’t outshine a meandering story full of dull, senseless protagonists and excessive vulgarity and gore. This book is full of the worst sorts of paradoxes: it manages to paint a picture of a world without consistent logic or rules that is also somehow incredibly predictable and boring to behold. The story could also easily be trimmed to half the length if Barker didn’t routinely scatter the main characters for no logical reason. I struggled immensely to finish it.

Powerful Speech

Abraham Lincoln’s words are as powerful as ever, and it’s great that Audible has made this available for free. I do wish Ryan Vincent Anderson sounded more like Lincoln however. Anderson has a smooth and strong voice, whereas Lincoln’s was noticeably high and twangy.
