Unlikable protagonist
Revisado: 03-25-24
The author doesn’t spend much time exploring the characters and giving them depth. The main character is selfish, obnoxious, and not to bright. He goes on these quests assigned to him by other unlikeable characters without depth, but fails most of the time, abandons friends and partners, mostly out of just sheer stupidity. I’m ok with mystery about the underlying mythology, but most of it is nonsensical at best.
The narrator is good, but if unused to a very strong Irish accent it could be difficult. Words and phrasing are difficult if not used to it, which I am not.
I bought the 6 book chronicles due to the value proposition of 68 hours for 1 credit and decent reviews. I stopped about half way into the third book to write this review and consider if I want to finish. I have no idea what’s going on, I don’t like any of the characters, and everyone wants to kill the main character, mostly because he is a jerk. I’ll take a break before I decide.

4 books are too much
Revisado: 08-16-23
Possible spoilers: our heroes are not only human they are not bright and not powerful like the story tells us. I can’t reconcile their failure at every turn. I don’t want to finish book 4 and I am forcing my way through it. The first book was good, but each one was a tiny bit more difficult to listen to as they went on. I do love Tim Gerrard Reynolds though, no matter what.

What would you do if you received a postcard saying only “We are here. Come find us?” No signature. Just a postmark: SPLIT VALLEY, NY. Adam Kleinhoffer, journalist and podcaster for Columbia Public Radio, and production assistant Melanie Lavin follow this breadcrumb to the second-smallest town in New York State. SPLIT VALLEY is an immersive experience. Using only “found audio,” Split Valley takes the listener on a journey into the woods upstate, to a small town diner, a local motel, searching for clues to the mystery of the cryptic postcard. Pull up a chair, dim the lights, and tune in...

Super short episodes that don’t go anywhere and are confusing. Could not engage with the story. Is there one?

Dante, Blays, and Gladdic's final effort to defeat him has failed. Within weeks—if not days—Rale will be destroyed. One last hope remains. They can't kill Nolost, but they may be able to eject him from Rale before he can complete his work. To do so, though, they'll have to destroy a world themselves: Olastar, the home of the portals that link all other places together.

Enjoyed until…….
Revisado: 01-29-23
I have about 5 hours left. Thinking about other reviews about repetitive stories, I didn’t experience that until a certain something came back to life. Most of the story I found interesting, not really repetitive, and agree with other reviewers that there was far less unnecessary sarcasm between the main characters. But about half way in that changed when an old story line came back, one I never really liked to begin with. It becomes very painful to listen to after all. Still, all in all, worth a listen but beware.

Historia
Agent Franks of the U.S. Monster Control Bureau is a man of many parts - parts from other people, that is. Franks is nearly seven feet tall and all muscle. He's nearly indestructible. Plus he’s animated by a powerful alchemical substance and inhabited by a super-intelligent spirit more ancient than humanity itself. Good thing he’s on our side. More or less.

Ok book in the series
Revisado: 08-01-19
I don’t enjoy when a series makes a departure from the main narrator and protragonist to go down the rabbit hole of other characters, but all in all this departure was better than Alpha and listenable. I’m struggling with Earl. He is supposed to be old and smart, but gets played all of the time. I had to skip the entire chapter where I saw the stupid trap he was going to fall into. It is too predictable. I know the author can’t make the good guys perfect, but there has to be a balance where they aren’t stupid.

Silly
Revisado: 02-18-19
I realize the main characters are teenagers, but the plot gets more silly in the second book. I could not finish it. It was over the top when the main character attempts to explain the gender neutral God and their worshipers. Unnecessary plot line that added no value, and an intentional ploy. I don’t object to this being part of a plot where it makes sense, but this was plain stupid.

Over arching story is good, but sometimes painful
Revisado: 10-27-18
While the main story and premise is good, many parts of the books, particularly this one and a couple others are very hard to listen to. Almost all of the characters, if not all, are extremely hard to like. The men are portrayed as idiots and the women smart but, *itches. Most people are mean, oblivious, and just plain dumb. And that’s the good guys! And there are A Lot of characters.
The narrators do not remind themselves of pronunciations as they start recording new books. Editing is poor with awkward pauses and lines repeated twice in this particular book.
The author had an obsession with what people are wearing and the size and shape of their noses which I find highly annoying.
This is a highly acclaimed series and I do see why. However, it could have been told quite well by cutting the series in half. I’m invested in completing it and just about to listen to book 8 anyway. The reviews I’ve read are making me dread that a little, but I’m invested, want to get to the conclusion, and looking forward to the Brandon Sanderson books at the end.
You’ll enjoy it the series if you know what to expect going in and that some of the books like this one are going to feel like a little bit of a waste and have you rolling your eyes.

Throughout the vast lands controlled by the Ironship Trading Syndicate, nothing is more prized than the blood of drakes. Unlistenable
Revisado: 03-25-17
This is one of those stories with many made up words and places. I keep hoping that I'll catch on as sometimes happens, but it is so overwhelming that I can't listen and it does not hold my attention. I wanted to like it, but I don't think I am going to finish the book.
