I read the book first and I can say that the story comes more alive with the narration of Ms Rudd.

The two main characters are a young married couple that are gifted with magic. Robinson Foster Hawksley and McKenna Aurora Hawksley (he takes her last name so she can get credit for the invention) keep working together with the purpose to stop a war between the Aesir (immortals) and the Mortals by using sound. Erlking rules the Aesir who's honor is bound to the truth while the Mortals use any means to archive their goal like duplicity and conniving. It reminded me of how's is nowadays 😔 even though to me the time in the story is the19th century.

General Colsterworth frequently participates in the narrative even with all the duties he has at the Gresham College in Bishopsgate and continues to pursue McKenna because he's sure she is semblance. His superior Master Drusselmehr starts harassing him because of all the things he has done.

It seems that everyone has conspired against Robinson so he won't be able to present his invention at the exhibit. And with all disputes inside the Invisible College it complicates things.

This book has a cliffhanger but I recommend it while you have book 1 fresh in your mind. I don't always remember the prior book and Mr Wheeler made me very happy when he wrote snippets of things that happened in book 1. I don't know where he get some of the words so I had to look them up to find out there are not in the dictionary.

Star Power

To me, I like this second book more than the first one, and I think it is because there is more involvement from Ellis's daughter, the Vice Admiral, in the actions that take place in this narrative. I love the mature relationship and trust between Ellis and Frank. They have to find a stolen gem, and along the way, more tragedy happens. You also get to know more details of other characters like Chatty Caffe and other friends. And of course, you can't leave aside Henry, the adorable cat.

The way the surroundings and wears/dreses were described are so detailed that I stared at the cover of the audiobook while I listened to the description of the dress. The cover creator did a great job based on Kristen description, or viceversa. Thanks to Kristen for letting me explore Athos.

Once again, I failed to point out who's done it at the end. Everyone seems to be the culprit, and the ones you're sure they done it are the least guilty. I will try my best in the third book of this series to guess who's the villain is.

The audio is awful, not the narrator. At the end of the chapter some words were cut off.

Cozy Mystery Sci-fi

When I read that a book is a Cozy Mystery I visualize a small town with a new resident that has inherent a house and that person tries to resolve a murder. When I started listen to Breathing Space I have to admit restating the audiobook after a few chapters and the reason was for what I mentioned at the beginning of this review. My mind had to adapt to the definition of cozy and add Sci-fi to it. After that I just couldn't stop listening and I can't wait for the next audiobooks.

The main character is a middle-aged widow that's the Head Librarian in the special spaceship Athos destined to do a round trip that will last 20 years. Ellis McFadden's daughter is the vice admiral of the spaceship and part of the reason for Ellis accepting the job. The trip includes personal android companions like cats (Hieronymus), birds...

Ellis reminded me off Jane Frost (apprentice detective) and Ms Painter (cat, Knitting). She tries to solve the first "murder" in the ship with the help of Frank from Mechanical engineering and while investigating they become close. Andrew, botanist and morning news correspondent, was not well liked creating many possibilities for the culprit.

The narrator is very good allowing you to distinguish who is who. No cliffhanger. I highly recommend this audiobook.

Trouble around Nocturne Fall

The two main characters decided to spend Christmas in Nocturne Fall each with his own reason. They just want to be alone in an environment that offers peace and quiet. Demetrius Voss, vampire and his cat Moonshadow get caught in a winter storm forcing him to get shelter on what it turns out to be Holly Winters cabin who he has not since in a while. She's there with with her cat Hexie. Not related to the book I was so happy to know the name because I'm not the only one to give the cat odd names since mine is named Hocus.
Problems occur on the barrier that keeps Nocturne Fall safe from evil and both are trying to figure out what it is. My first thought was to get Alice Bishop but she's not available. From here on you need to hear the audiobook so you can figure out if they resolve the problem and how. Also what ends up happening between Demetrius and Holly, I don't want to spoil it for you.

Jane and Sinclear go to New Orleans to visit a friend of Sinclair Max but when they arrive his friend has to leave. They decided to make that stop before heading to the North Pole to give birth since she's7 month pregnant. There's is a murder that someone is trying to pin it on Max. Of course Jane has to investigate with the help of Sinclair and the lovely Birdie. I love it when great characters and places are introduced in the plot but I love more when two of my favorite stories interact with each other. There's also some twist, every time I think I know who's the murderer new information is introduce and makes me go WHAT. I won't give specifics so I don't reveal spoils.

Queen Sparrow (Ro) and Queen Anyka continue their battle between Peace or Possession of the kingdoms and the grimoire of dark magic. Each one has its own reasons to possess the book. There's a lot of twist and changes on some of the characters. I love it when great characters and places are introduced in the plot like the fire breathing citizens of the Cloud Kingdom. There's also some emotions not typically of the character. At times I felt bad for Anika, I won't give specifics so I don't reveal spoils. Also the romantic relationships in both kingdoms are displayed. The sad thing of all of this is having to wait for the next book/audio. "Dios te bendiga Kristen" so you continue enlightening our lifes.

This book has been so emotional for me that during chapter 33 I had to get the tissues 😢 . There's so many different plots that complement each other making it hard to stop listening. I had to check the time left thinking that is about to finish and then it takes several turns. I was not expecting the last chapters character.
Remy and Epholia back each other without dominating or criticizing each other. She's not someone that you can step on. You can see how her confidence grows.
Thank you for writing this wonderful book.

What I like the most about Kristen Painter is that she takes you away from the monotonous stories we're you already know the plot. The main characters on this one is a gargoyle and the lady that bring him to the human side.
