Niche passion project, good for any time of year

It is great to hear someone with this much passion for something tell their story in their own words. Foley is a good writer and he obviously has an affinity for Santa Claus much beyond most people. Good listen

Suspend disbelief and logic
Revisado: 03-23-23
I know it is cool to put twists in the plot, but this plot has a bunch of twists that seem to be there to just be twists with little or no support. The characters are thin at best and their actions don't really have any consistency with their supposed motives. The characters were so twisted up into nonsense trying to make the story fit the plot that by the end I was just listening to see if there was any way the whole thing could be salvaged.... and it couldn't.
There were actually portions of this book that were really well written and were enjoyable to listen to, the narrator did a good job, but the story and plot should have never been allowed to go to print as it was. It wasn't cohesive and that only became more obvious as time went on.

Eskens is always a great listen
Revisado: 02-10-23
This book is no different. His characters are well written and the ones he keeps from story to story are well fleshed out. The story itself is believable enough to not challenge credibility. I can root for the hero and truly hate the villain, but there are also times I sympathize with the villain and am frustrated with a protagonist. It isn't a fantasy world of black and white, but a good representation of what real life can look like. Bad guys are still bad guys, even if they do good things sometimes,, good guys can do bad things or dumb things and still be good guys. I was captured by the whole cloth of the story and really loved it. It always seems like this Max Rupert story is the last and there has always been a lag until the next one, but I really hope I get to dive into Max's world again.

Long story, but kept me interested the whole way
Revisado: 10-05-22
I usually don't love stories that span so much time and keep skipping back and forth in time and perspective, but this was very deftly done. Every time change and perspective change actually added to the story in a very productive way.
The narrator did an excellent job as well. Didn't try to take over the show, but enhanced the story greatly.

How else to explain the feelings these dreams provoke in him - not disgust, not horror, but excitement? As Bryan and his longtime partner, Lawrence 'Pookie' Chang, investigate the murders, they learn that things are even stranger than they at first seem.

Great book, but not a happy one
Revisado: 08-31-22
This turned out to be more of a downer and a horror tale than I expected from how it started. It was still very well written and narrated and I can't take away from that, but not a tale or type of tale I would like to listen to again. If a book where the bad guys really are gory and become more and more unlikable and the misery for the good guys is pretty intense and unrelieved is something you are ok with than by all means buy this book. The story is good with a couple too many stereotypes and typical scenarios to make it great. The narrator was very good, but there were some effects with the narration that I found distracting and a couple of plot inconsistencies that maybe made sense if you attributed it to flaws in characters, but maybe just forgetting the world and environment the author had built.

Great performance, not too fancy, not too simple,
Revisado: 08-12-22
The story didn't wasn't simple, but it wasn't trying to be overly complicated with ridiculous twists. It is dark and it is sad. There isn't really any humor in it. It sets a definitely grim mood with the writing tone and the subject matter, but it works well. The narrator is excellent. She keeps a good pace, she doesn't really differentiate between character voices a lot, but she still manages to make it clear with the way the book is written. It works for this style of writing and doesn't distract from the story at all. The characters at time seem a little lacking,a little stupid, but only a little and that is a flaw in almost all mystery novels.
I will definitely be listening to the next in this series.

Surprising, but great read.
Revisado: 06-13-22
I am not totally sure how to classify this book, but it is just a good listen. It has a few threads going and they seem to be flying apart at the halfway point, but stick with it and the author brings them together beautifully.
I see others say the narrator reads too slow. I always listen at 130% speed and the narration was as good as I have heard.
Even though I had a good idea where the whole thing was going well before the end of the book, it was well done and I really enjoyed it. There was enough foreshadowing I could see it coming, but I still wanted to read ahead and find the full details of the story.

Grim story, depressing, but so very well told
Revisado: 05-31-22
The narrator was very good, would certainly listen to her again, but she does have a small issue with differentiating voices and is the only reason I didn't give 5 stars. Not her fault that there are a few out there that are incredible. She is still very good.
This is a depressing story, the characters have been beaten down in life and are barely surviving, not thriving. However, they are trying. I won't say there are shining points of light in characters in this book, but there are things that are less dark.
This is not a story that will leave you feeling good when you are done, but it is one you will remember. The characters are well fleshed out. I would say brought to life, but this whole book is a depressing world and the characters really are just getting by as best they can.
The author gave me a tour of purgatory and when I was done listening I was happy to get back to my life, but she is a tour guide to be reckoned with.

Disappointing
Revisado: 05-31-22
I loved the first book in this series and was eagerly looking forward to this one, but everything that made the first book fantastic is missing in this book. It gives a good back story for Dr. White, but not a particularly believable or rational one. The narrators were excellent, it is just the story was way below what I was expecting from this author. Giving it 3 stars is due to the fact that it is well written technically, it just doesn't have the tension or depth of book 1. The narrators made it worth listening to.
I would say the author is batting .500 on this series and if another book drops I would be interested, maybe she has something in mind that I need to see in a subsequent book. As it stands, this book is not good.

Lucas Davenport had crossed paths with her before. A rich psychopath, Taryn Grant had run successfully for the US Senate, where Lucas had predicted she'd fit right in. He was also convinced that she'd been responsible for three murders, though he'd never been able to prove it. Once a psychopath had gotten that kind of rush, though, he or she often needed another fix, so he figured he might be seeing her again. He was right.

Another solid entry
Revisado: 05-26-22
I think the series has become somewhat formulaic, but the formula works for a solid listen. The narrator is good, but not great, his distinctive voices tend more towards caricatures than other readers. He isn't bad at all, just not one of the best.
