Disappointing after the reviews
Revisado: 04-22-25
Many cliches and seemingly designed and written by an AI with a prompt to write something for a Christian audience with traditional values.

Historia
A thirty-four-year-old American woman—a secret agent—is sent to do dirty work in France. “Sadie Smith” is how the narrator introduces herself to her lover, to the rural commune of French subversives on whom she is keeping tabs, and to the reader. Sadie has met her love, Lucien, a young and well-born Parisian, by “cold bump”—making him believe the encounter was accidental. Like everyone Sadie targets, Lucien is useful to her and used by her. Sadie operates by strategy and dissimulation, based on what her “contacts”—shadowy figures in business and government—instruct.

Lots of interesting ideas
Revisado: 10-07-24
Sadly, the author butchers the reading of her own work with a monotonous cadence and poor pronunciation of French words and names.

Some beautiful writing but…
Revisado: 02-26-24
I started a friend’s copy of the paper version and was really impressed. Sadly, the author’s reading is not as compelling as the words on the page. A lack of inflection and modulation and a voice that comes from the upper chest limit the impact of the writing.

Brave attempt at myth making
Revisado: 12-03-23
This story relies on common tropes of American values- respect for the military, power of positive thinking etc that just seem trite. In combination with fantasy about creating parallel worlds, I found myself wondering why I was listening to this…

Historia
Hugh and Margaret Darcy are raising their family in Sydney amid the brothels, grog shops and run-down boarding houses of Surry Hills, where money is scarce and life is not easy. Filled with beautifully drawn characters that will make you laugh as much as cry, this Australian classic will take you straight back to the colourful slums of Sydney with convincing depth, careful detail and great heart.

Full of warmth
Revisado: 10-29-23
If you have been to Redfern or Surry Hills in Sydney, you’ll appreciate the quintessential characters, language and values depicted in this classic. It’s tough, rough, very moving and sometimes funny. Hard not to see a show like Kath and Kim as somehow springing from the same evolutionary branch.

Historia
Not long ago, Naomi Klein had just such an experience—she was confronted with a doppelganger whose views she found abhorrent but whose name and public persona were similar enough to her own that many people confused her for the other. For a vertiginous moment, she lost her bearings. And then she got interested, in a reality that seems to be warping and doubling like a digital hall of mirrors. It’s happening in our politics as New Age wellness entrepreneurs turned anti-vaxxers find common cause with fire-breathing far right propagandists (all in the name of protecting “the children”).

Historia
Reverend Willie Maxwell was a rural preacher accused of murdering five of his family members for insurance money in the 1970s. With the help of a savvy lawyer, he escaped justice for years until a relative shot him dead at the funeral of his last victim. Despite hundreds of witnesses, Maxwell's murderer was acquitted—thanks to the same attorney who had previously defended the reverend. Casey Cep brings this story to life, from the shocking murders to the courtroom drama to the racial politics of the Deep South.

Interesting biography of Harper Lee through the stories of a murdering reverend and the folksy lawyer and liberal politician from the South who represented him. Outlines Lee’s life and struggles and her friendships, including Truman Capote, and family.

Historia
Alex Armstrong has changed everything about herself—her name, her appearance, her backstory. She’s no longer the terrified teenager a rapt audience saw on television, emerging in handcuffs from the quiet suburban home the night her family was massacred. That girl, Alexandra Quinlan, nicknamed Empty Eyes, was accused of the killings, fought to clear her name, and later took the stand during her highly publicized defamation lawsuit that captured the attention of the nation. It’s been ten years since, and Alex hasn’t stopped searching for answers about the night her family was killed.

Historia
One sunny Spring morning, EJ's simple life is turned upside down when the town's master gardener unceremoniously hands her a stack of handwritten letters that have all been addressed to a nonexistent person at the garden. This simple act sets in motion a chain of events that will lead EJ on a life-altering quest to uncover the identity of the mysterious letter writer―and into a surprising head-on confrontation with the harsh realities of the racial injustice that is as deeply rooted in the life of her community as the ancient herbs cultivated in the Moravian garden.

A good effort but the device of a dead letter detective is so unrealistic and the imagining of a George Eliot fan base overlaid on Southern awakening even more so…
