Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

It's as Good as the Reviews Say
Revisado: 10-16-18
I'm really sick of highly rated books that I feel are second rate. This is not one of them. This book is amazing. It has fully-developed, realistic characters with good sides and bad, smart dialogue, it's funny, somber, thought provoking. You will fall in love with Star. And the narrator is phenomenal. Don't see the movie; "read" the audible.

When Amanda Gallo, fresh from the backwater of local TV, lands the anchor job of her dreams at FAIR News, she thinks she’s finally made it: a six-figure salary, wardrobe allowance, plenty of on-air face time, and a chance to realize her dreams, not to mention buy herself lunch. Instead, she finds her journalistic ideals shredded as she struggles to keep up with the issues in a ratings-crazed madhouse.

Four stars
Revisado: 09-03-17
Very interesting topic. You have to get to the end to judge how all of the parts fit together. It's light, lightly written, but does become a good illustration of what is going on today. The characters are slightly drawn, but their purpose is to show them, not so much as individuals, but as representatives of forces that push real people, and newsrooms, into the position they find themselves in.
It was difficult at times to tolerate the debates on the shows, as one who is SO sick of this on TV all the time. But if you can push through that, you can see the big picture the author is drawing. The book does not have any answers. Just a little insight and humor.

Classic
Revisado: 09-03-17
You don't need me to tell you O. Henry is great read. My only complaint is with the editing. The narrator is great with his pacing; however, when each story ends, there is no pause and it goes straight into the next story before you even realize the last story has ended. You will definitely need to stop the play because each of these storied needs more time to contemplate.
Some people will definitely find these stories dated, some stories more so than others.

Historia
The chiefs of staff, often referred to as "the gatekeepers", wield tremendous power in Washington and beyond; they decide who is allowed to see the president, negotiate with Congress to push POTUS's agenda, and - most crucially - enjoy unparalleled access to the leader of the free world. Through extensive, intimate interviews with 18 living chiefs (including Reince Priebus) and two former presidents, award-winning journalist and producer Chris Whipple pulls back the curtain on this unique fraternity. In doing so, he revises our understanding of presidential history.

Great Read! Just the right amount of detail
Revisado: 09-03-17
This book was very informative regarding the roll of the WH Chief of Staff position and its importance to the success of the presidency. It was also a nice primer on the eight presidencies that were chronicled. I did find myself wanting more detail, but perhaps that was outside the scope of this book. You can read a book about the particular president to get more info, but when you do, you will have the benefit of knowing the significance of this particular WH position and how it compares to others who have held it.
In other words, I think the narrow scope serves the book well. It also made it a quick read, and easier to keep track of the individuals mentioned if you are multi-tasking, as we audio-readers frequently are.;)

You don't need me to tell you this book is fantast
Revisado: 09-03-17
You don't need me to tell you this book is fantastic. What you really want to know is: abridged or unabridged? This book was awesome as it is, and the narrator, different from unabridged, is brilliant, one of my favorites. But, Hamilton's story is really fascinating, and because he is glossed over so much in other writings of the period there was a lot I didn't know. Combined with how interesting the writing, I will have to say I could have done the 30 hours for the unabridged pretty easily. One of those books I didn't want to end.

Historia
Willow Havens is 10 years old and obsessed with the fear that her mother will die. Her mother, Polly, is a cantankerous, take-no-prisoners Southern woman who lives to chase varmints, drink margaritas, and antagonize the neighbors - and she sticks out like a sore thumb among the young, modern mothers of their small conventional Texas town. She was in her late 50s when Willow was born, so Willow knows she's here by accident, a late-life afterthought.

This is not a five star book
Revisado: 05-14-17
I am incredulous at all of the 5 stars for this book. I will admit there was a feel good part of this book about a third of the way in. The characters are the best part, well-drawn and realistic. But a woman becoming a mother at 56 or whatever it was, is totally unbelievable at the beginning, as well as some overwrought, corny stuff about a raptor at school.. Then there is a realistic part, about the garden and the brother and the neighbors. And then the bookend of the unbelievable and, frankly, stupid raft trip. Makes me think she is a young author with potential, though in fact she has written several books over 17 years.
Don't bother with this book. You will feel like you wasted your time. Narrator is a redeeming feature.

Historia
In this brilliant historical classic, Dan Sisson argues that Thomas Jefferson thought democratic revolutions would be necessary from time to time to break the grip of autocratic factions on the government. That is how Jefferson saw the election of 1800 - and the lessons for today couldn’t be more obvious. Most historians celebrate Jefferson’s victory over Adams in 1800 as the beginning of the two-party system, but Jefferson would have been horrified by this interpretation.

Jefferson bias
Revisado: 12-18-16
Many books are biased in Jefferson's favor but this one takes the cake. I bristled so much at his insulting description of John Adams in the first chapter that I couldn't go on. The author clearly shares the political view that Federalist were Monarchists, which means he doesn't understand any of them. Why go into history if you aren't going to look at everything from all sides?

Great history, Quick read
Revisado: 06-14-16
Want to mention at the top that this actual book is shorter than the full time mentioned, as it includes the two appendices, which are actually a reading of the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. Very nice that they were included in the audio, though.
I feel this book was intensely interesting, and perfectly edited to a quick yet comprehensive subject matter. Highly recommend.

Junk food
Revisado: 12-01-15
Initially I thought it was interesting enough. I wasn't looking for something stupendous - just some simple mystery as a distraction from the heavier stuff I usually read. The writing is simplistic and immature, but I could get past that. The character development was thin, but the characters likable enough. The dialogue was wooden. But I was interested enough to keep going. But in the end, the book was a whole lot of nothing. It was like eating at McDonalds. Now I can enjoy a greasy burger and fries every once in a while. But when I'm done, it often gives me a bad taste in my mouth, and I feel like that was a wasted bunch of calories.
So, if your in the mood for something super simple and kind of junky just to kill some time you could probably enjoy this. But there is much better stuff out there. Try Girl on a Train instead.

Biography and History - my favorites together!
Revisado: 11-01-15
I really enjoyed all of these biographies. I would not give this lecture series the full five stars, though; more like 4.6, simply because these lectures would have been better with another 10 or 15 mins. I could feel the Professor cramming information into the short 30min lectures. Some of them are shorted on biographical info that could give one a better feel for the individual. Nevertheless, I enjoyed these every minute and the Professor was excellent. You don't need to know everything about this period, but the Great Courses Long 19th Century would nevertheless be a good primer. (That one is also excellent)
