Revisado: 05-29-24
the whole story gets you involved with each character and the challenges they are having. Real life challenges. Beck was awesome woman character that spoke her mind.

Well written and hard to put down.
Revisado: 03-22-24
Historical information was appreciated. I was in elementary when this was started. Amazed by the sacrifices of so many. Well, explained by main character as she tells her story. The reason for a 4 in overall stars is the f word being used so often.

A New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant - and that her lover is married - she refuses to be bought.

didn't finish
Revisado: 10-29-22
It started slow trying to know the characters. Interesting culture during wartime struggles. So, I enjoyed the first book, but there was too many f words and sexually explicit scenes that ruin the story line. So, I didn't finish it.

Persomi is young, white, and poor, born the middle child of illiterate sharecroppers on the prosperous Fourie farm in the South African Bushveld. Persomi’s world is extraordinarily small. She has never been to the local village and spends her days absorbed in the rhythms of the natural world around her, escaping the brutality and squalor of her family home through the newspapers and books passed down to her from the main house and through her walks in the nearby mountains.

Great story of hope
Revisado: 08-11-22
Not only did I like the characters but the narration was well done. The story of survival during racial political times. Pessimee is a strong child\woman with integrity, grit, kindness to all around her especially her mother. Loved the clean language and pure love even when there's obvious evil all around.

Lower score for bad language, which was probably normal for this plot, but unappreciated by me. But, interesting journey for her to learn more about herself.

finding her father's past
Revisado: 02-21-22
Interesting plot to learn her father's past. Joanne is a strong young/grown woman and it's fun to follow her. I was disappointed in the in depth sexual scenes. Unnecessary and why I scored lower.

Typical family
Revisado: 10-30-21
I loved the voice ofJoy (australian). This book is slow with alot of petty family drama that was so annoying sometimes. So, I kept listening being curious if it got better. After building the characters it was easier to relate to what happens in the end. Good message for retired people

But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. The voices were easy to listen to with emotion in their voices that kept me interested. I couldn't stop listening and wishing for their success. I love the woman Elsa became. And the characters of the children were so realistic for their age. Appreciate that its a great story with no swearing or big sex scenes
