Historia
Married for political reasons at the age of fourteen, Marie Antoinette was naive, impetuous, and ill-equipped for the role in which history cast her. From her birth in Vienna in 1755 through her turbulent, unhappy marriage, the bloody turmoil of the French Revolution, her trial for high treason during which she was accused of incest, and her final beheading, Marie Antoinette's life was the tragic tale of disastrous circumstances colliding.

A little harsher of a history than the other biography
Revisado: 09-24-24
I love consuming history pertaining to Marie Antoinette. She is incredibly interesting to me. The author of this book gave a little more leeway to some of the grayer stories and rumors of history. It’s a bit more bleak of a story.

The story is better than the narration
Revisado: 02-16-24
I appreciate that I can hear about the great Marie Theresa's daughters lives all in one book. I like how the story is segmented to go over each daughters life. There are a couple of things that can take me out of the immersion. The narrator sounds like she's about to break into tears with how she speaks. It's tolerable most of the time, but sometimes I'm thinking "is she okay??" Yeah she's fine, she just talks that way. I love the story though. There are some parts of that are a little strange, like how the author is trying hard to convince the reader that Louis XVI had autism. The author also claims that Marie Antoinette’s second son was “almost certainly” father by Count Fersen. That’s an incredible claim to make when the heart of the child has been identified based on his DNA. The pushing of truth doesn’t happen very often, but it definitely takes me out of it when it does.

I enjoy listening to this book. The narrator is perfect, the story is to the point and flows nicely. The subject? She is extremely frustrating. Everyone in her life is insufferable from the Duke to her "best friend." I get it, it was a different time. These people were just extremely unlikeable. I still liked hearing about it though.

Historia
Andrew Roberts' Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon's thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine.

The story is very detailed- the narrator was eh...
Revisado: 02-16-24
I'm trying my best to get through this book. I owned a physical copy of this book for ages, but it was so large it was daunting to think about picking it up. I opted to get the audiobook to hopefully seem more digestible, but the narrators voice can be grating at times. His accent is strange and he can sound like he's lecturing at some points. I've only been able to listen to this in small bouts due to getting annoyed at it, but I'm trying to get through it. The story is super detailed on his life. Napoleon was a strange guy.

Glad a book like this exists on her life
Revisado: 02-16-24
This book took a little longer for me to get through due to the general sadness around Marie Therese's life. I would have to be in the mood to listen to the narrator who spoke like she was describing a harrowing tale- don't get me wrong, Marie Therese faced adversity following the revolution. I just didn't think it needed to be as intense the entire book. That being said, I was so glad a book on her exists. She had a truly depressing life given that her immediate family was taken away from her so young. It's sad. It was good to hear that despite not having children, she was impactful on children she took under her wing. May she rest in peace.

Josephine's life story was as turbulent as the age, an era of revolution and social upheaval, of the guillotine and of frenzied hedonism. With telling psychological depth and compelling literary grace, Carolly Erickson brings the complex, charming, ever resilient Josephine to life in this memorable portrait, one that carries the reader from the sensual richness of her childhood in the tropics to her final lonely days at Malmaison.

Kept me wanting more
Revisado: 02-16-24
I really enjoyed how the narrator reads this book. Something with how she reads kept me from drifting away from the story at hand. The story was great! I've always been fascinated by Napoleon, but much more so with Josephine. I loved hearing her story and how she went from quiet beginnings to Empress of France to then the quieter end of her life. I felt like I really got to know her through this book. I didn't expect to enjoy listening as much as I did, but I'm glad I chose this book!

An iconic figure of the 1960s and ’70s, Pattie Boyd breaks a forty-year silence in Wonderful Tonight, and tells the story of how she found herself bound to two of the most addictive, promiscuous musical geniuses of the twentieth century and became the most famous muse in the history of rock and roll.

Short and sweet
Revisado: 02-16-24
If you're looking for a deep dive into the relationship between Pattie and two of her most famous partners, you'll be a little disappointed. I think the book lacks detail, but I understand why she would be as brisk in telling the story as she is. Whether it's because it's been so long since it happened or she is trying to minimize the hurt of talking about the past, this audiobook was pleasantly short. I do appreciate that the author is narrating, however sometimes it felt too much like she was reading a book. I know that is literally what she did when she recorded it, but sometimes I feel the authors can help provide more character to the storytelling with how the story is read. Overall- it was a short and sweet story and I did enjoy her insight, even if it seemed broad.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Beautifully written and clearly read. I truly think this book was meant to be told instead of read and that’s why I got the audiobook instead of a physical copy. I wanted to hear his tone and his story in his voice. Kept my attention with the almost journal-like entries of different parts of his life.

Historia
France's iconic queen, Marie Antoinette, wrongly accused of uttering the infamous "Let them eat cake", was alternately revered and reviled during her lifetime. For centuries since, she has been the object of debate, speculation, and the fascination so often accorded illustrious figures in history. Married in mere girlhood, this essentially lighthearted child was thrust onto the royal stage and commanded by circumstance to play a significant role in European history.

This is my comfort book, I swear.
Revisado: 01-09-23
I have always loved history, so it's no shock I love this book. But what makes this book different than the rest is how Marie Antoinette is portrayed in present tense through the years of her life as opposed to looking back on her life knowing her unfortunate end. It's incredibly relaxing to listen to and I wish there were more books like it.
