Historia
Jane Cleveland and Prudence Bates were close friends at Oxford University, but now live very different lives. Forty-one-year-old Jane lives in the country, is married to a vicar, has a daughter she adores, and lives a very proper life in a very proper English parish. Prudence, a year shy of 30, lives in London, has an office job, and is self-sufficient and fiercely independent - until Jane decides her friend should be married. Jane has the perfect husband in mind for her former pupil: a widower named Fabian Driver.

Narrator is unbearable! Fake English accent. Ugh!
Revisado: 02-02-22
I cannot imagine who owns the rights to the works of Barbara Pym and would allow Audible to hire this inept and embarrassing narrator. This author is one of the greatest 20th century masters of high comedy and the observational novel. Her work is butchered by Mary Sarah. Lovers of Pym's works should get them on tape from the British recordings. What the hell is wrong with Audible?

Take a trip back to Jane Austen's world and the many places she lived as historian Lucy Worsley visits Austen's childhood home, her schools, her holiday accommodations, the houses - both grand and small - of the relations upon whom she was dependent, and the home she shared with her mother and sister towards the end of her life.

Perhaps the best biography of Austin
Revisado: 03-25-21
I have read at least a dozen biographies of Jane Austen, from Park Honan to Claire Tomalin, and I was astonished by this masterful depiction of Jane Austen's family and domestic life, especially the financial realities faced by all the Austen clan. Lucy Worsley was primarily known to me as a BBC television presenter on Tudor history, and I was astonished by the scholarship and minute attention to detail herein. I should also say that, although no one will ever know for sure what Austen looked like, I truly do feel from Worsley's depiction of her that I now know the author as a person as well as a writer.

A great novelist butchered by a terrible narrator
Revisado: 10-12-20
Audible has got to be the cheapest outfit for around. How dare they hire of someone as untalented as Mary Sarah Thomas better known for soft points and bodice rippers, To read one of the greatest novelists of the 20th century? I'm sure she came cheap because she's American and is using a phony English accent which is so terrible I almost threw my phone against the wall the 4th time she said "chopp-ter" to introduce the next chapter. Really appalling. Common words are mispronounced as well. Clearly there was no editing or oversight for this piece of garbage.

Not as winning as other Lucia tales, tho' fun.
Revisado: 09-06-20
Miriam Margolies, the brilliant actor, is a delightful, energetic narrator but somehow manages to flatten Georgie and make American Adele sound like a gangster's moll. Otherwise, delightful performance of minor Benson gem in the wonderful Lucia saga.

Historia
When Lytton Strachey published Emininent Victorians, he took the general perception of the Victorian age among English-speaking readers and turned it upside-down. Four of the most eminent and idealized heroic figures of the Victorian age came under his witty and unsparing gaze and emerged, astonishingly enough, as human beings.

It sounds like a Drunk narcissist is reading this
Revisado: 08-16-20
Audible gets worse and worse. I thought the travesty of the so called narrator Mary Sarah reading in her nasal, irritating phony English accent he brilliant Barbara Pym and Jane Austen was the lowest that this company could go, but the the narrator of this classic is absolutely appalling. disgusting! What the hell is wrong with the producers and editors at Audible?

A captivating comic novel from Angela Thirkell's much-loved 1930s Barsetshire series: trainee barrister Colin Keith makes an ill-advised foray into teaching at Southbridge School. To his parents' dismay, Colin Keith - out of the noble but misplaced sense of duty peculiar to high-minded young university graduates - chooses to quit his training for the Bar and take a teaching job at Southbridge School.

The narrator does the Barsetshire world of Angela Thirkell, and its between the wars life in country society in England, a tremendous favor by adding wonderfully funny but accurate accents. In particular, the school boys are perfectly delineated and add a great deal of enjoyment to this period piece.
