Locations and scenery are just suggestions with weak descriptions like cave dark and village muddy. After the first evolution you could skip to the last 5 minutes and accurately assume everything that happened. At times the main character is so unbearably smug and arrogant that I want him to fail or get punched in the face. Just found out this is another royal road blog story which would explain all the fans flooding this with high reviews.

The story felt adlibbed. The world building actively hurt the believability of the world. The MC is a self proclaimed shut in gamer but before going into a dungeon for the first time unequips most of his skills... I don't know if this makes it better or worse but I think this is just one of many oversights by the author. Toward the end there is a jarring tone shift. The story goes from dark, gritty and adult to wacky, slapstick and childish.

The Good
A fun unique story that I would recommend to anyone who is a fan of LitRPG. Love the unique magic system of deck building and dragon riding. The MC isn't annoying or dumb so that's a win!

The Bad
At times it feels like the world doesn't exist outside of the MC. The world should be full of carded people using magic to affect the world in every way possible, but we hardly see anyone doing anything unique or interesting. We should see carded people using magic for every conceivable task, but we don't! This becomes a problem as MC gets more cards; it feels like no one else has any. Which makes the world feel dull when you notice it.

The Conclusion
The second book could easily fix most of my problem with the story and even show the lack of magic at the current location as intentional. The majority of the story was 4 stars, but it started falling apart toward the end and lost one more. I am harsh on this genre because it's being flooded with terrible books, but I would recommend this one.

"Sorry about the lifetime of constant abuse, pain and crippling loneliness but in my defense I didn't actively try to kill you" basically every character. No one is likeable. Everyone is incompetent. World building relies on your previous knowledge of cultivation. Laws and customs are told to be absolute but only apply at the whim of the author. The antagonists are given near immunity to all repercussions again and again and again. The MC has perfect recall and reads all day everyday but knows very little! Even if she had a normal memory she would still have bizarre holes in her knowledge. She cant read a map and doesn't know the basic geography of the surrounding area. The excuse given time and time again is the library doesn't have any information on that subject. So your telling me in a world where trade, medical, political and martial ability is achieved through cultivation doesn't have a single book on the subject!

The best thing a can say about the introduction is that it's rushed. Once the story actually starts it is a fun ride. The characters are by far the best part. I have read a few stories from Royal Road, and they all have the same problem of slowly but constantly moving forward to the next thing. Honestly the best way to read this story is to think about it like a tv series. It's almost episodic and there is a Christmas episode. I would recommend it and I will be reading the next book.

Vita the main character is an adorable/creepy street orphan who develops necromancy powers!
The first half of the book had me hooked I loved this unique main character and wanted to learn more about her and how she would use her new powers. Unfortunately, the world building is paper thin and the setup to Vita adventuring and using her power is pushed to the side quickly. The second half of the story focuses on many coming-of-age themes and emotional conflicts. Which isn't a problem in itself, but the same conversations are repeated over and over again. All while most characters freely admit their emotions don't even make sense. I will admit I am sensitive to teen angst, but I wanted to give a heads up to anyone who is similarly afflicted. The difference between speaking and thinking is not always clear and this isn't helped with the authors habit of continuing conversation and then saying, "but I didn't say that out loud". Most of my problems with the story are resolved by the end of the book so I am hopeful the next book will be better.

Mild Spoilers
The MC is a war harden veteran who just returned home after his entire team essentially dies from lack of information. He is then given a job as a bartender from his uncle. During his first shift as a bartender he is attacked by a werewolf because no one told him it was bar exclusively for gods and monsters.
How do you think he reacts?
A: Have a mini existential crisis from find out that magic and gods are real.
B: Get angry about almost dying because of a lack of information.
C: Apologies about not knowing magic is real and apologies about messing up the werewolf's drink. Then immediately go back to bartending like nothing happened.
If you guessed C then this book might be for you. This book might not be for you if the following scene makes your brain bleed.
The MC upon his third day bartending and only the second time seeing gay Lucifer Morningstar aka the Devil notices that he is not wearing the same stylish shorts and tank top from the first day. After noticing the change to a long sleeve shirt and pants the MC starts slow dancing him because he does want to draw attention when he asks "Lucy" about being domestically abused...
Surprisingly the part of this exchange that I cant get over is that fact the author thinks shorts and a tank top are stylish or appropriate attire for an upscale bar with patrons tipping in the tens of thousands.

The MC has a level, rank/grade, class, rarity, attributes points, dao, cultivation, noble title and achievement titles to determine his arbitrary strength. There is even a town building system thrown in. The author has gathered every LitRPG system I can think of from this genre and blended them together with zero care or depth. I could go into detail about all the problems with the systems in this book but its just not worth untangling this mess. Eventually you will just lose interest because of how unreliable or unimportant most of the story is.

There is no reason the main character should be an adult from another world. He never questions why or how he came to be in another world. He never thinks about going back to his world. He never talks to anyone about being from another world. Even in his own mind he never brings up cliches like missing his smartphone or cheeseburgers. All of his friends are kids. All of his love interests are kids. All of his rivals are kids. He has the emotions of a kid. He has a child like innocence at times. The main character is just a normal kid from what we are shown of other kids in this world. Why not have him be from the world he is reincarnated into if they both have magic and he never mentions his old world? The author also relies heavily on you having previous knowledge of this genre to fill in a lot of gaps and being able to just jump straight to the over powered character stuff. Most of the story was carried by Travis Baldrees great narration.

What disappointed you about Oathbringer?

Book 2 could have been made into a good ending. The majority of Book 3 felt like everything that happens after the credits roll. We know more small battles, politics, reunions and rebuilding will happen after the day is saved but i don't need to read a book about it. I was never given a reason to care about anything in this book.

Has Oathbringer turned you off from other books in this genre?

No but maybe other Brandon Sanderson books.

What character would you cut from Oathbringer?

Shallan didn't grow as a character and it felt like none of her filler mini quests added anything to the plot. Way back in the first book its establish that Shallan has issues so why is it still being shoved down my throat 120 hours later? Shallan started off strong but eventually her story just lost direction and purpose. The only problem with cutting Shallan would be getting rid of Kate Readings great narration.

Any additional comments?

I have grown to hate flashbacks.
Several side stories seemed to be dropped.
Loved the first two books.
