OMG Bring back Grover Gardner
Revisado: 10-27-22
Having bee completely immersed in the first 14 of the books read by Grove Gardner I was not prepared for the abysmal narration by Susanna Burney. The next in the series "Earthers" is even worse read by Nicole Poole. I see almost all others share my view. I have to finish the series I guess but these last few books need to be re-narrated ASAP.

One of Joseph Campbell’s most popular, most quoted works, A Joseph Campbell Companion: Reflections on the Art of Living is a treasure trove of insight and inspiration, thought-provoking in its depth, poetic in its scope. Drawn from a month-long workshop at the world-famous Esalen Institute, the Joseph Campbell Companion captures Campbell at his best: wise, funny, intelligent, and inspiring.

Hugely Disappointing
Revisado: 10-27-22
Given the reviews etc., I was looking forward to classic enlightenment and I was not expecting this collection of the world's greatest cliches intoned by rote. "You can't make an omlette without breaking eggs" was the last straw. No where's that refund button gone? So disappointing.

Historia
There’s chaos in Hollywood at the end of the New Year’s Eve countdown. Working her graveyard shift, LAPD detective Renée Ballard waits out the traditional rain of lead as hundreds of revelers shoot their guns into the air. Only minutes after midnight, Ballard is called to a scene where a hardworking auto shop owner has been fatally hit by a bullet in the middle of a crowded street party.

Losing the plot?
Revisado: 11-23-21
First, I must thank Michael Connelly for many years of thoroughly immersive, reading, listening and watching. I have consumed everything: all the books and TV series several times and also can't wait for the new Micky Haller TV series.
Perhaps it was the directors, but I have found the portrayal of Harry Bosh by Titus Welliver less and less sympathetic and the Rene Ballard's go-it-alone style less credible with each book. Maybe it's a reflection of the lack of community and caring that permeates our society or living in LA amid the uncontrolled blight of increasing dirt and homeless encampments. As Rene asks Harry in the book: "Whatever happened to everyone counts or nobody counts?" Trying getting the police to come out for a break in here in LA as we did today and you can see the disintegration first hand. Even the police told us that the lay-offs mean we have little chance of getting a someone to come out or get protection. I think it's gotten to Michael C too. You can see it as Michael video tours the book's locations (- see his web site.) For those wishing to escape today's reality, this book may not be for you.
As others have commented the book has good moments, has only Bosch cameos and lacks the pace of earlier episodes. Certainly not up to the rest. Otherwise check it out.
Even though I'd rate this one a "meh" on a scale of 1 to 5, will I get the next episode as soon it hits Audible? Yes, of course :)

Outstanding ... my new favorite author
Revisado: 08-22-19
I have seen a handful of great non-stop action movies in my time. Their pace keeps your breathless till the end - but to find this in a book is really amazing - and to find it in two books in a row - wow! I'm a big fan of Michael Connelly books and others in the genre but this takes it to another level. I just listened to "the Defense" (read that first, BTW) closely followed by "The Plea." Maybe from the first book I figured out a twist or two in the Plea but they both have the same "how could he possibly get out of this" thing going.
I just loved both of these though now I have to find the discipline not to just plunge into "13." I'll probably have to find and physically read "the Cross" and "the Liar" first. Steve Cavanagh if by some chance you read the reviews on your books on audible, I just want to say thank you. Nicely performed too. 5* Can't wait for the movies of the books - are they being made?

Thorough, thought-provoking, needs 2019 update
Revisado: 04-01-19
Highly recommend as it captures all key thoughts of a fascinating topic. I had no problem with the narration. Reading about about rapidly changing corporate innovation written in 2015 means an update in 2019 is needed - by definition - as the world has moved on. I also purchased the Sprint ExO playbook/implementation guide (Sept 2018) which would not work as an audio book. Some info on actual experiences of overcoming resistance to change (the "corporate immune system" as the book calls it) would be helpful. It definitely is long and I skipped some of the company examples. A good reference to keep.

Historia
The man most hated by the LAPD - a black lawyer who has made his name by bringing lawsuits alleging racism and brutality by police officers - has been found murdered on the eve of a high-profile trial. The list of suspects includes half the police force. And Harry Bosch is the detective chosen to head the investigation. The political dangers of the case are huge. If it's not investigated fairly, the public outcry could make the Rodney King riots look tame. But a full investigation will take Bosch into the ugliest corners of law enforcement.

DON'T GET THIS VERSION!
Revisado: 09-24-17
I loved Burt Reynolds, he was such a fine actor/personality .... but oh dear ..... This slurred, tired (being generous) reading is just flat-out embarrassing. Definitely one of Michael C's best so listen to the Peter Giles unabridged version - really great. I never get abridged books so this was an inadvertent purchase, anyway.
So Audible, there's enough reviews here. Just quietly withdraw this book so we can keep our good memories of Burt intact - Do it for Burt.

Who would have thought it? A Grisham dud!
Revisado: 07-26-17
Like the lead character in the book says: "if I don't like a book after 50 pages, I ditch it." I should have listened to her but after all it''s the great John Grisham, right? So I stuck it out to the end of this eagerly awaited book - it just had to have some massive twist at the end - but it just fizzled out. Maybe the lame FBI characters should have investigated who was the real author of the book. He can't have written this?. Next time I won't pre-order till I see the reviews. Narrator was not the worst certainly better than on the latest otherwise very good Michael Connelly book .... Overall the book was so disappointing - as other reviewers have said.

Historia
Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Not his best but MC's so much better than the rest
Revisado: 07-25-17
I have just re-watched series 3 of Bosch which unlike the brilliant 1 and 2 does seem to be heading towards a soap with too many subplots and characters that have to be crammed into each series. I think this book was influenced by the TV series from that point of view. Yes, I do agree with the comments on the narrator who has to resort to saying who she is saying the lines for. Not great. Yes, Rene has many of Bosch's anti-authority traits etc., and maybe the ending seemed a bit dashed off so it's set up for episode 2 (hopefully with a different reader). However, I really liked the story line and because let's face it, Michael Connelly is so much better than all the rest of the crime writers that I can't wait for the next Bosch novel and hopefully S4 on Amazon prime. So ignore all the whining - including mine - just listen and enjoy!
