Would you try another book from James R Wells and/or Mitchell Lucas?

I'd definitely read another book by either the author or narrator. The author had believable characters and a moved the story along at a nice clip. The narrator did well. He kept it varied without venturing into voices that get irritating.

If you’ve listened to books by James R Wells before, how does this one compare?

I have not listened to one of his books before.

What about Mitchell Lucas’s performance did you like?

The narrator's tone matched the tone of the book well. He could convey a decent set of characters without resorting to screechy voices or etc.

Could you see The Great Symmetry being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

It could go either way. You could trim a few things and have something better than 'Jupiter Ascending', but maybe not as good as '5th element' or leave everything and do it as a 6 part BBC series. Ending lends itself to TV show more, I suppose.

Any additional comments?

I'd just be interested to hear more about lead to the middle section in the tunnels. It turned survivalist for a few chapters when the rest of the book was so scifi. And can we please get a different unit of distance than 'Parsec', so unoriginal, not meta as others would have you believe.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Unreconstructed M and Other Stories to be better than the print version?

No. Many stories are filled with robotic characters described as having monotone, tinny voices. However having the narrator take this so literally can make some small portions of the audiobook a little grating.

What did you like best about this story?

I'm biased as I'm a fan of Phillip K Dick to begin with, but there is just something about his philosophic scifi noir, deeper, sometimes darker themes maybe, that I love. While there are other modern authors that strike similar tones, Phillip K Dick is still the godfather.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Ray Greenley?

I think it'd be fun to hear Simon Pegg or Andy Serkis's take on the stories.

Who was the most memorable character of The Unreconstructed M and Other Stories and why?

Leroy Beam was the most memorable character for me. So many other characters have these strong motivations driving them. Leroy, on the other hand, is searching for that motivation, unsure of what he wants. That just struck a cord with me.

Any additional comments?

This is an enjoyable collection of Phillip K Dick's short stories. Best in short bursts otherwise the womenizing men and femme fatales may overwhelm you. Never underestimate a book that makes you question owning a cuckoo clock.

If you could sum up The Rules of Supervillainy in three words, what would they be?

Great comicbook farce

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Rules of Supervillainy?

One of my favorites was when he goes back to rob the same bank for the second time. The situation and dialogue were a pretty hilarious combo.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

About the only thing I didn't like was the narrator's hokey Brooklyn (or was it suppose to be Jersy) accent for the witch.

If you could take any character from The Rules of Supervillainy out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I'd hang out with Diabloman. Villain with honor, but puts family first. My kind of guy.

Any additional comments?

This book was given to me at no charge, in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Blast. I really enjoyed the novel. Good characters, crazy story. Fun from start to finish. Some of Gary's backstory drags on and he's suppose to be witty in a Spiderman-esque sort of way, but it's not that clever and gets a little annoying at times. Still the hero's attitude and bumbling through comicbook scenario after scenario well worth the time and effort.

What would have made Pirates better?

They could of focused on the investigation or fights with pirates instead of 'the bumbling adventures of captain alcoholic'.

Has Pirates turned you off from other books in this genre?

Nope.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Focused more on the investigation and not just relied on psychics to just magically know everything.

What character would you cut from Pirates?

The main character. He can't find his way out of a wet paperbag, oggles every women he mets and needs the bad guys handed to him on a silver platter.

Any additional comments?

I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review via AudiobookBlast dot com.

I wanted to like ‘Pirates’, but in the end I couldn’t get over the lazy scifi and cringe-inducing writing. The concept has all the necessary points needed for good, light-hearted popcorn scifi: Space navy, pirates, captain with personal issues to overcome. Yet many aspects were just borrowed from pop culture scifi: FTL, tachyon drives, shields, even the ‘Picard maneuver’. Oddly other aspects of the universe don’t feel thought out at all. This is hundreds of years in the future and people are still using buttons and the naval academy still hands out paper textbooks?

All this would be forgivable if the story was action packed and enjoyable. But after the initial pirate attack, they get sidelined for a significant portion of the book. Fine because the book is really an exciting investigation thriller about how the Navy drives the pirates out into the open, right? Wrong. The characters just fumble around aimlessly under a psychic who can see into the future tells them exactly who the bad guys are and what to do to catch them. How are we suppose to care about a bland character who just does what he’s told to do.
Lastly the writing is nothing stunning. Two of my favorite examples: “As always, we welcome you with our welcomes.” and “He shook his head in the negatory manner.” Wow, just wow. Not all of it is that bad, but you get my point.

At least the audiobook narrator had some fun with it. Something Mark Hamill-esque about it made it the most enjoyable part of my listening experience.
