Captivating!
Revisado: 05-18-21
There are few things more fascinating than hearing someone tell their own story, especially when that story exposes you to experiences outside your own. Leah's memoir was riveting. I listened to it in one day and hung on every word. As someone who also spent most of my life in a very high demand religion, there were a lot of relatable aspects of Leah's story but I laughed most uproariously when she described having no idea what was wrong with her wailing newborn. Also very relatable. I felt her frustration and sorrow at being disillusioned with a religion that failed organizationally to live up to the standards it demanded of it's own in parishioners. Again, I related, recalling the bitter tears I shed over my own church. But it s in the details of our differences that I was swept up. Teens surviving on their own, the RPF, LRH's policies, and backstage with Kevin James. It's a beautiful tale of a beautiful life that is still unfolding, in many ways, quite publicly. Keep making trouble, Leah Remini! The world is better for it.

Historia
Smart, hilarious, and incisive, the Liberal Rednecks confront outdated traditions and intolerant attitudes, tackling everything people think they know about the South - the good, the bad, the glorious, and the shameful - in a laugh-out-loud funny and lively manifesto for the rise of a New South. Home to some of the best music, athletes, soldiers, whiskey, waffles, and weather the country has to offer, the South has also been bathing in backward bathroom bills and other bigoted legislation.

Insightful
Revisado: 09-03-17
Zipped through this listen. Some of the language was very rough and the boys are not fans of organized religion so there was a bit of mockery that was hard to listen to for me but this was well worth the listen anyway, and then some. It's not as funny as it is in insightful into what makes the South, rural white America, and social conservatives the beautiful and simultaneously broken culture that it is. Never fear, liberals don't get off easy either. (Take a few deep yoga breaths, Tristan.) I'm a Carolina native from a town you've never heard of and this book hit home so hard I could've written it myself. It hits boys. Give it a listen.

Historia
In Finding God in the Waves, "Science Mike" draws on his personal experience to tell the unlikely story of how science led him back to faith. Among other revelations, we learn what brain scans reveal about what happens when we pray; how fundamentalism affects the psyche; and how God is revealed not only in scripture but in the night sky, in subatomic particles, and in us.

Historia
Just when Glennon Doyle Melton was beginning to feel she had it all figured out - three happy children, a doting spouse, and a writing career so successful that her first book catapulted to the top of the New York Times best seller list - her husband revealed his infidelity and she was forced to realize that nothing was as it seemed. A recovering alcoholic and bulimic, Glennon found that rock bottom was a familiar place. In the midst of crisis, she knew to hold on to what she discovered in recovery: that her deepest pain has always held within it an invitation to a richer life.

Touching, terrifying, true.
Revisado: 10-29-16
This memoir speaks to elements of my own life story. From hiding underwater and sending my representative into the world, to living defensively and withdrawing from love and its companion, pain.Like Glennon, I found God away from organisations and administrators as soon as I discovered grace. Highly recommend this book for anyone who has found grace and love in the wreckage of an old life.

Historia
Why would we look to the Bible for guidance on how to have a more just society? But Timothy Keller, pastor of New York City’s Redeemer Presbyterian Church, challenges these preconceived beliefs and presents the Bible as a fundamental source for promoting justice and compassion for those in need. In Generous Justice, he explores a life of justice empowered by an experience of grace: a generous, gracious justice.

A Solid Keller
Revisado: 02-09-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Generous Justice addresses God's injunction to care for the poor and oppressed by showing ties between those mandates and the Biblical concept of justice. If you are already familiar with Keller's work, you will recognize the theme and appreciate the references that flesh out his ideas as they are presented in this work. As to performance, I prefer when Keller presents his own material. This reading was lackluster and I found myself distracted often while listening. Still, it's a worthy listen.
What other book might you compare Generous Justice to and why?
This book lacks the earth shattering power of The Prodigal God but in its own quiet way, it addresses pure religion and redefines the meaning of what it is to be just.
