For some it’s an opportunity. For others it’s a moment to question their faith: In God, in science, in everything. Still others try to keep the world running in the face of absurdity and uncertainty. And then there are the billions looking to the sky and wondering how a thing that was always just there is now... something absolutely impossible.

what a strange and new story. they say nothing is new under the sun... but this is new.
Revisado: 03-11-25
I want a character tree, because I heard connections, but I would have loved to see a map of people ans events.
the story of stories that were loosely or tightly wound together, the book was intriguing, and though I wanted more of many stories, I understood the need to be brief. pig son was maybe too far, and I am unsure how much paint the ship brought to paint so much!

Historia
Melody is not like most people. She cannot walk or talk, but she has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She is smarter than most of the adults who try to diagnose her and smarter than her classmates in her integrated classroom - the very same classmates who dismiss her as mentally challenged because she cannot tell them otherwise. But Melody refuses to be defined by cerebral palsy.

this book was recommended to me by a librarian friend. as better than Wonder, and I think maybe it was!
I am not sure about the use of the R word in the book... it is eventually explained that it is a hurtful word... but the narrator just says it like 20 times.
The heavy tension of something bad going to happen took up most of the second half, and made me think a few bad things were going to happen that would have taken this book straight out of young adult fiction.
This book does a great job at making me wonder about all the kids who do come through my classroom each year.

Historia
Alex Green is a young girl in a world much like ours, except for its most seminal event: the Mass Dragoning of 1955, when hundreds of thousands of ordinary wives and mothers sprouted wings, scales, and talons; left a trail of fiery destruction in their path; and took to the skies. Was it their choice? What will become of those left behind? Why did Alex’s beloved aunt Marla transform but her mother did not? Alex doesn’t know. It’s taboo to speak of.

loved it. I was unsure at first, but once the narrator aged up a bit and understood more, the story became immensely pleasurable.
acceptance of trans, lesbian, and poly groups. no sex is mentioned or referred to. just statements of relationships, and who dragonned. wonderfully done.

so weird, interesting, and unexpected!
Revisado: 07-07-21
the entire concept of this book was just unexpected. I enjoyed the different perspective each character brought to the story. I want to read read this novel, as I am not a great listener.
I did not like the flat, harsh voice of the narrator... but I guess I gre accustomed to it as it didn't really bother me by the middle.

Historia
It’s bad enough that Hazel and Gray have defied the demands of Hazel’s foul stepfather. The Monster has forbidden their romance. Now they’ve awakened in the forest, phones dead, hours past curfew. But not far away is a grand estate in the middle of nowhere. The door is open. In this short story about choosing your own path, the fury of the Monster that awaits them back home may be nothing compared to what lies ahead.

trigger warning, abusive stepfather, bipolar mother.
the story jumped back and forth which is fine if you are listening in one setting, I did not. I was unaware that this was a short story! kind of obvious twist.

Historia
It may be a wonderful world, but as Dan Riskin explains, it's also a dangerous, disturbing, and disgusting one. At every turn, it seems, living things are trying to eat us, poison us, use our bodies as their homes, or have us spread their eggs. In Mother Nature Is Trying to Kill You, Riskin is our guide through the natural world at its most gloriously ruthless. Using the seven deadly sins as a road map, Riskin offers dozens of jaw-dropping examples that illuminate how brutal nature can truly be.

Historia
After a political scandal, fledgling lobbyist Dempsey Jo Killebrew is left almost broke, unemployed, and homeless. She reluctantly accepts to refurbish Birdsong, the old family place in Guthrie, Georgia. But, oh, is Dempsey in for a surprise. "Bird Droppings" would more aptly describe the moldering Pepto Bismol - pink dump. There's also a murderously grumpy old lady who has claimed squatter's rights and isn't moving out. Ever.

sappy and stupid
Revisado: 04-28-19
The book starts terribly, with several women under 30 complaining about older men and how unattractive they are. I nearly stopped listening at that point but I thought maybe I'd listen a little bit more, the main character is especially vapid, although we are to believe that she has gone through law school and passed the bar.
Things I did like about the book include the main character's growth, her relationship with the old lady that is a squatter in her house, and her fire and anger.
Things I did not enjoy about the book The over sexually charged men who are in their 50s being attracted to young women in their thirties in a creepy rapey way. the first sex scene was super awkward and uncomfortable as he didn't listen to her objections about being naked in front of the window even though he was clearly of an exhibitionist she was not. I also did not enjoy her father and the power that she gives him continually over her that was just weird is it something that southern women struggle with? I did finish the book and despite myself I found myself enjoying the book after the first sex scene that super duper awkward. I also got some people confused but that's because I listened and didn't read it I did not appreciate how unapologetically Confederate they were the people as the Confederacy represents hatred towards blacks, and in 2019 that doesn't fly, at least not with me.
