Historia
Behind every Christmas tradition is a story, often a forgotten one. Every year as we put up a tree and pour the eggnog, we’re continuing generations-old narratives, while being mostly unaware of their starting chapters. Join Brian Earl to explore the fascinating stories behind the most wonderful time of the year. It's equal parts nerdy deep dive and warmhearted celebration. Think: NPR meets Clement Clarke Moore! Christmas Past is one of the longest running Christmas podcasts, now in its tenth season. Vanity Fair says: "With excellent production, engaging narration, and short, digestible ...

I have been charmed and delighted to find that the comments that have come in for this series have been sound, friendly, helpful and informed. In this final episode for this series, I’ve singled out one or two. Thank you for your questioning, your listening — go on searching, asking and wondering. Wondering in both senses: wondering by wanting to know and wondering by marvelling. And here’s to madmen, hermits, heretics, dreamers, rebels and sceptics. Hosted on Acast. Another brilliant turn
Revisado: 03-25-23
He’s done it again! Fry has rendered an esoteric and arcane topic lively, accessible, and dare I say it, fun! A great conversation starter! He’s also teaching me exquisitely refreshing profanity!

Historia
From Little Nell to Miss Havisham, Dickens’ Women tells the story of Charles Dickens’ life through his beloved characters. Cowritten and performed by Miriam Margolyes, best known for her role as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films, this one-women show is a celebration of her infectious passion for Dickens’ work. Taking on 23 different Dickensian characters, many of whom were inspired by real people such as Mary Hogwarth, Dickens' sister-in-law, Margolyes showcases her astonishing versatility as a performer. Dickens’ Women delighted audiences across the world in 2012 as Margolyes took her Olivier nominated show on tour for the bicentenary of Dicken’s birth.

Brilliant evening with a gifted actress
Revisado: 02-17-23
I look forward to pressing PLAY on this recording whenever I need a break from something heavy or depressing. Miriam Margolyes never fails to make me laugh and be in awe at her interpretations of some of Dickens’ most memorable women characters. Her biographical sketch is engaging as well. Maybe one day I can see her live!

Historia
The "unsinkable” Titanic was four city blocks long, with a French “sidewalk café,” private promenade decks, and the latest, most ingenious safety devices… but only twenty lifeboats for the 2,207 passengers and crew on board.
Gliding through a calm sea, disdainful of all obstacles, the Titanic brushed an iceberg. Two hours and forty minutes later, she upended and sank. Only 705 survivors were picked up from the half-filled boats of “the ship that God Himself couldn’t sink.”

Still the definitive work on the disaster
Revisado: 11-08-21
This audiobook is such a calming and centering experience for me. I often revisit it during stressful times. I pretty much know Lord’s book by heart now. I love the performance and the overall feeling of nostalgia this audiobook brings to a very familiar subject.

Historia
In 1914, the war which was to have been wrapped up by Christmas had - in reality - only just begun, as all sides entrenched themselves deeper into the Great War. Christmas Eve, 1914 follows one company of British officers as they rotate forward to spend their Christmas on the front lines, a mere 80 yards from the German guns. Upper- and working-class men and boys are thrown together into one trench and struggle to survive.

Historia
Christmas brings out the best and the worst in us, as can been seen in this evocative anthology. Among what Thomas Love Peacock calls the "many poetical charms in the heraldings of Christmas," there are eulogies by saints and diatribes from curmudgeons. Here, Christmas is expounded by divines, sung by rustics, deplored by philosophers, made mystical in stories and summed up in a line by the poet Elizabeth Jennings: "The hush, the star, the baby, people being kind again."

A joyous, holiday treat!
Revisado: 11-30-19
Such a great collection of texts, carols, and performers! From ancient to modern, drawn from such varied sources and traditions, it’s an education as much as it’s a holiday sampler! I just wish there was a hard copy to accompany it.

Can you imagine writing to Father Christmas and actually getting a reply? Every year, the children of J.R.R. Tolkien would write to Father Christmas, and the letters they received told wonderful stories of his adventures at the North Pole. These humorous tales are brought to life by Derek Jacobi as Father Christmas, John Moffatt as Polar Bear, and Christian Rodska as Ilbereth the Elf, complete with specially composed music.

A new Christmas tradition
Revisado: 11-24-19
What a treat for the ears! This treasure has become an annual tradition in our home each Christmas. There’s no one quite like Derek Jacobi. When you add the late, great John Moffat, delightful things are bound to happen. Of course, you’ll want to get a hard copy of Tolkien’s classic to see the illustrations. Even the interstitial music here warms the heart. Enjoy!

Historia
Four decades after it first shook the nation, then the world, William Peter Blatty's thrilling masterwork of faith and demonic possession returns in an even more powerful form. Raw and profane, shocking and blood-chilling, it remains a modern parable of good and evil and perhaps the most terrifying novel ever written.

Brilliant, chilling production
Revisado: 11-18-19
Blatty was the perfect choice to narrate his chilling work. Who knew he had such acting prowess? Great demon noises! The inclusion of the girl’s voice so unexpectedly at times was quite jarring and unforgettable! Kudos!
