Lauren tells her story well and it is a story that is amazing. What a dedicated daughter and wonderful person. I will follow her to see where all her hard work leads.

Historia
Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

It’s a double album!
Revisado: 06-26-24
I loved the New York short stories section. It took me a while longer to get into the LA section because I was not connecting with the characters, mainly because my head was still in short story mode. But when it all started coming together, it had me on the edge of my seat.
Yet another Amor Towles book that I will be reading multiple times. I find that with each reading, I pick up another revelation that demonstrates the brilliance of Amor Towles.

Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to become Southern California’s first giraffes. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

Read the prologue last!
Revisado: 12-31-23
I was engaged from word one of chapter one, but bored to tears by the prologue. My focus at this time was on taking care of my mom single-handedly in the last months of her life, so for a book to grab me like this one did is saying a lot!

A character study of a man drowning in weakness
Revisado: 12-31-23
I guess my frustration with this story was that I kept waiting for him to grow some balls. He not only hurts himself with his weakness, but everyone around him.

Historia
In July of 1991, the country was shocked by the unfathomable crimes of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. But no one was more shocked than his parents. In A Father's Story, the listener becomes witness to the incremental unraveling of a parent's image of their child, and the thousand different reactions that follow. In his attempt to understand the nature of his son's psychosis, Lionel Dahmer methodically scrutinizes every possible contributing factor to his son's madness. His desperation is palpable as he searches for clues in the emotional, psychological, and genetic landscape of his son's life.

My heart goes out to this man.
Revisado: 12-31-23
While I knew a lot of this information, it was still very informative to be able to experience it from his fathers viewpoint. What a heart wrenching tale. You really don’t think about the family of the perpetrator very often. It left me wondering, what became of his biological mother? Where does she fit into all of this, aside from the fact that she was a mental nutcase herself.

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.
