Historia
Part memoir, part history, Burn Book is a necessary chronicle of tech’s most powerful players. This is the inside story we’ve all been waiting for about modern Silicon Valley and the biggest boom in wealth creation in the history of the world. When tech titans crowed that they would “move fast and break things,” Kara Swisher was moving faster and breaking news. While covering the explosion of the digital sector in the early 1990s, she developed a long track record of digging up and reporting the facts about this new world order.

Sometimes the author shouldn’t read
Revisado: 03-26-24
Yes, it’s a first person narrative but I think it would’ve been better served by a more professional female voice. Swishers high school valedictorian cadences distract from the meat of an otherwise really fascinating account of her success in navigating the nasty rocks and shoals of the techie world. Forewarned I would have bought the print version.

Gabriel as the Clark Kent of Artists
Revisado: 07-31-22
The mischievous machinations of the fine arts world serve as the background for what comes over as one of Silva’s less convincing plots, even by the usual standards of disbelief suspension one concedes to this genre.
Now newly added to his portfolio of skills as ninja warrior, art restorer and unsurpassed paterfamilias it is now revealed that our hero is capable of producing, with great ease, masterwork forgeries (in the interests of justice, of course) that pass muster as originals by the most sophisticated savants and spectroscopes of the art world, The main artistry here is the work of Edaordo Ballerini and his repertoire of voices and accents that makes the listener want to hang on. The concluding Author’s Note is worth listening to for its description of the financial hi-jinks of today’s art world.

Great story with weak ending, politics aside
Revisado: 01-01-21
Well read by Giles who is probably best Connelly voice since Len Cariou, gives punch and grit to the story. The ending was somewhat less than satisfying to me because I was anticipating a more definitive exposition of the frame up with exposure of the villains. An added epilogue is also a bit abrupt and hastily disposed of.
Also do understand the Trump team listeners' chagrin at Mick's methods of jury selection but I think a potential jurors bumper stickers are fair game for analysis of the drivers possible prejudices, wherever your allegiances lie. Political views on both sides often come with a lot of prepackaged notions of morality and it's not an extreme long shot to bet on someones eventual verdict pronouncement based on those stereotypes. Whether I was guilty or innocent, I would want Mick defending me.

Historia
When Pope Paul VII dies suddenly, Gabriel Allon is summoned to Rome by the Holy Father’s loyal private secretary, Archbishop Luigi Donati. A billion Catholic faithful have been told that the pope died of a heart attack. Donati, however, has two good reasons to suspect his master was murdered. The Swiss Guard who was standing watch outside the papal apartments the night of the pope’s death is missing. So, too, is the letter the Holy Father was writing during the final hours of his life. A letter that was addressed to Gabriel.

Not Your Usual Gabriel
Revisado: 08-28-20
Silva steps into new territory departing from the intricacies and violence of Mideast and European geopolitics and entering into the intricacies and violence of antisemitism as historically promulgated by the Roman Catholic church. It’s not a great fit for Gabriel as he and his other protagonists spend much time advancing the story by detailing the crucial historical events of the gospels that point the accusatory finger at the Jews who ostensibly bear witness against themselves for the death of Jesus. Most of the real action is perfunctory by past standards and the scope of Gabriel’s dealings with the innermost machinations of the Roman Curia makes it difficult to suspend disbelief. Definitely worth reading for an account of the roots of Christian anti-Semitism but less interesting as an action thriller . George Guidall of course is superb as always; he could make a laundry list sound exciting.

The number one New York Times best seller by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough rediscovers an important chapter in the American story that's "as resonant today as ever" (The Wall Street Journal) - the settling of the Northwest Territory by courageous pioneers who overcame incredible hardships to build a community based on ideals that would define our country.

Tough act to follow
Revisado: 05-22-20
I guess I have been spoiled by listening to previous books by McCullough read by the author himself. While the overall narration was very good, McCullough’s easy, laconic and authoritative voice made his stories a joy to listen to. I missed it in this book.

Subpar Furst
Revisado: 01-17-20
A series of unsuspenseful disconnected series of situations occurring to, and missions undertaken by, the hero with no unifying central goal that should pull the story together. The reading is highly dramatic but not commensurate with the weak thread of the tale. The ending hastily compressed as if the author was in hurry to get it out to the publisher.

Not one of the best
Revisado: 05-17-15
While John Lee does his usual excellent narration, I have come to be a Paul Hecht aficionado. I think Hecht captures Bernie's cynicism much more effectively. The narrative has too many side trips that really don't propel the story.

Historia
In a case that spans 20 years, Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to a file from 1992, the killing of a young female photographer during the L.A. riots. Harry originally investigated the murder, but it was then handed off to the Riot Crimes Task Force and never solved. Now Bosch's ballistics match indicates that her death was not random violence, but something more personal, and connected to a deeper intrigue. Like an investigator combing through the wreckage after a plane crash, Bosch searches for the "black box", the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together.

Good story marred by inappropriate read
Revisado: 12-12-12
McConnahie is miscast for this one. His is an announcers style that is more appropriate for narration, The disconnect between Harry's character and his "voice" is distracting. Len Cariou, the old pro is of course a difflicult act to follow but I'm sure Audible can come with someone in that league.
