Historia
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

Excellent narration
Revisado: 07-08-24
This is my second Stephen King listen, and while I enjoyed the slow world building, some of the language has not aged well. If you are interested in post-apocalyptic magical realism and want a long listen, I’d recommend it. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard a better narrator for an audiobook.

Historia
Eva Kavinsky wakes in a dark cellar, with no memory of how she got here. Imprisoned with her, seemingly at random, are four men. The only way out is the trapdoor in the ceiling – and it's locked. The single clue about what brings them all here is a cryptic message sprayed onto one wall. Connect the dots. Repent. A camera fixed high above reach is livestreaming this whole nightmare to the world. What confessions are they meant to make to their unseen audience?

Not worth your time
Revisado: 12-30-23
The premise was interesting but it was much longer than needed, not that well written, and no satisfying payoff at the end. I wish I’d gone with something else.

Cool main characters trapped in a subpar book
Revisado: 03-07-22
This story has pretty aggressive levels of racism and sexism woven into most conversations which I could deal with that if the story were great and well written, but neither are the case. It was slow, choppy, and didn’t do a particularly good job giving us visuals along this epic journey of Kim’s, which was probably the biggest letdown. The protagonist is legitimately interesting… but I ended up reading an online walk-through of everything after chapter 9 just to see how the plot resolved.

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

This is easily the best narrator I’ve ever heard on audible, and I couldn’t stop telling my family the plot as it went along. I hope to read more from this author as well.

First I want to thank the FBI for clearing this book for publication. I feel phenomenally lucks to have had a chance to hear these stories.
Second, I cannot express how fantastic the narrator was! He spoke in two languages and multiple voices seamlessly. He was even able to inflect his voice in such a way that made it clear when he was speaking in a translated dialogue. Wow.

Historia
Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty - a 20-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre - took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. With an original voice that combines fearless curiosity and mordant wit, Caitlin tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor, and vivid characters (both living and very dead).

A light read on a dark topic
Revisado: 02-22-20
I’ve read “light” books on death before, like Stiff. This one was good in that taught me a few new things, was an easy listen, and gave me some mental space to consider how I think about death.
Cons:
1. Laziness - The most interesting content was clearly her recycled, perhaps slightly augmented college research.
2. Self promotion - There is an unwarranted amount of repetitive personal branding philosophy in the book. I looked her up after and saw that she has clearly built an online presence for herself so this tracks, but if that kind of calculated self indulgence puts you off you may want to stay away from this one.
3. Insecure - The author goes out of her way to convey how tall, smart and pretty everyone says she is. It got a little bit cringey at times.

Historia
In a world where violence in the name of religion can impact so many other people's lives, it's critical to understand the intersection between religion and violence. What's required is not to see religion as inherently violent but to recognize that the violence associated with religious groups and communities is worth exploring and interrogating. In these 24 lectures, embark on a global, multidisciplinary investigation of religious violence. Delivered with honesty and sensitivity to the diversity of spiritual beliefs, these lectures examine the roots of this phenomenon and guide you toward more informed ways of thinking about it.

Dr. Bivins calmly and carefully threads together many types of “violence” and religious bases for them across centuries and spanning the globe. If there is a particular conflict or type of violence you want to delve into this won’t be the course for you, but I appreciated the broad swath of conflicts covered and the overarching message that attempting to better understand ourselves and each other can only help us move forward.

Great recap for an agnostic
Revisado: 01-17-20
This course is full of fascinating little linguistic tidbits lost in translation of the Bible (e.g. who came up with the name Jehovah? Was the snake in Genesis really a dragon? Satan just means “the accuser”?!) I never felt that the lecturer was preaching, which was great. I would have liked a bit more context on how the Old Testament is interpreted by religions today, but with 12 hours of audio I really couldn’t ask for more with one credit.

Historia
Discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life, Anne Frank’s remarkable diary has since become a world classic - a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit. In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a 13-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the “Secret Annex” of an old office building.

Words of a child, read by an adult
Revisado: 01-02-20
This version of the text is far better than the one I was required to read in high school; the new passages shed greater light on Anne Frank’s internal dialogue. I didn’t mind that the narrator’s accent did not match that of the author, but having an adult narrator had the unexpected effect of making Anne Frank’s words sound more juvenile than they are for a writer her age because they are being read by an older woman. Imagine having your mom read your diary. If you select this audiobook, keep it in mind.
