Historia
Twelve-year-old Shad Hadid has never quite fit in. The other kids at school don’t understand him, so he spends most of his time alone, cooking for his teta and daydreaming of opening his own Arabic bakery full of tasty treats. But when Shad is attacked by a shadowy monster, he learns his late baba was an alchemist with the ability to mix charms, elixirs, and mists—and he’s one too!

I typically enjoy middle grade fantasy but this was not very enjoyable. I imagine my young readers *might* like it. It was extremely juvenile but not in a fun and engaging way, to me. Very surface level characters and the plot was…eh… I just didn’t care.

Such a fantastic story!
Revisado: 09-12-24
The story and characters were both so well written …something that can be overlooked by authors fire this age group. More than the good writing, it was FUN! I couldn’t wait to listen next each time I had to stop. The narration was exquisite (despite my worry in the first minute or two that I wouldn’t love it). I didn’t remember that it was the start of a series when I started, but after getting into it, I desperately hoped that it was! Hooray!! Off to get the next book!

Historia
Jake and Ellie have been through a lot together, from home repair to homicide investigation. So when they decide to open a chocolate-themed bakery, they figure it'll be a piece of cake. With Ellie's old family recipes luring in customers, they expect to make plenty of dough this Fourth of July weekend. Having family home for the holiday only sweetens the deal for Jake - that is, until the ill wind of an early-season hurricane blows up her family's plans. But as bitter as the storm is, something even more sinister is brewing in the kitchen of The Chocolate Moose - where health inspector Matt Muldoon is found murdered.

Pretty good story, narration wasn’t my favorite
Revisado: 06-20-24
The story moved along well. The main characters were likable enough and their relationships were realistic for the most part. I didn’t feel deeply connected to them or all that vested in what happened to them, though. The narration fell flat for me. Throw in more swearing than I ever want or expect in a cozy and a wrap up party at the end that just didn’t feel like it fit and it was just an ok experience. No draw to pick up another book from this author or narrator.

I tried reading this several years ago before I was much of a reader. I found it overwhelming in description and song. I don’t know how far I read before giving up… this is my first attempt since that time and I can’t imagine being bored by description OR song in this delightful book. I loved it!

First time getting through The Hobbit
Revisado: 02-05-24
I enjoyed the story, somehow it wasn’t quite what I expected it to be. The performance was good (I especially liked listening to the pronunciation of the names and the singing of the songs…both were detriments to me getting through the printed book).

Wonderful performance of an interesting telling of a WWII story.
Revisado: 01-10-24
I liked the way the story was presented, in the two parts, though I must admit it took me a bit to feel like I was really understanding. I enjoyed the performance. The foul language, while I understand how it fits, was more than I expected or appreciated.

This was a miss for me
Revisado: 11-27-22
I love Sara Rosett's other books so I was excited about this. As a military spouse (and mom of several children) I was intrigued by the characters and setting. I didn't feel like it represented my military experience, much, if at all. Ellie, the main character was a pretty big downer. I was kinda irritated with how much she complained (ironic, since that appears to be all I'm doing in this review). But...I do love the twists and turns and the way the author wraps things up.
The performance was ok. Her voice was very relaxing.

Revisado: 11-29-21
Yes, this is a long (LONG) book... but it doesn't feel like it. I got swept up in the story right away, despite it being over 2 years since I read (listened to) the first one. The performance is fantastic by both the make and female readers. But, the world, the characters, the story are each incredible.
