Aural Mess of a Good Story
Revisado: 10-13-20
I don't know what the goal of the multiple narrators was, but if it was confusion it succeeded at that. I had read the other reviews that complained about the narration and they are all completely accurate and valid complaints. What a mess. After the first few hours, I had to consciously decide to ignore the multiple voices as character or whatever that was and just take them as multiple people reading the book. That helped some but it kept me from getting immersed into the story and the world as I would have otherwise.
That said, the story was interesting and I liked it well enough. Didn't hate it. Didn't love it either.
It's a slog to listen to with such messy narration, and I would have bailed on it after the first couple of hours of confusion. I stuck with it in honor of my recently deceased uncle, who loved this book. Glad I did. But it needs to be redone.

I Finished It Annoyed
Revisado: 01-30-20
My rating is actually closer to 2.5 stars. I did not love this book.
I liked the premise of the bromance book club and I expected more actual book club than was featured.
However, I was supremely annoyed by Thea. I won't spoil it, but I'll just say that while couples always deal with issues from selfishness, hers was too much.
And I wasn't expecting such explicit sex.
Not for me.

Not every lie sounds untrue. Some lies are repeated so often they seem to be common sense. That's why lies about God are so dangerous. The Gospel According to Satan examines eight lies the enemy wants us to believe and provides eight lines of counterattack against them. Jared C. Wilson reveals why these lies appeal to us, shows how they harm us, and provides ways to counteract them. We can renounce Satan's counterfeit gospel, but first we must see it for what it is.

Necessary Corrective Truth
Revisado: 01-30-20
The Gospel According to Satan is a grace-filled, yet convicting book that pokes at the beliefs we Christians hold that are contrary to what God has actually said in Scripture. A week after listening, I'm still ruminating on some things that the Lord is working on correcting in me.
Jared's writing is accessible for anyone, but filled with thought-provoking spiritual truths and always the Gospel of Jesus.
The narrator was good, but I would have preferred to listen to the author narrate his own book.
Highly recommend.

The Formula No Longer Works for Me
Revisado: 03-07-19
I was an early fan of the Bess Crawford novels. But after a while, the formula isn't working for me anymore. I find her nosiness and that she inserts herself into situations where she's clearly unwelcome annoying.

Disappointing
Revisado: 02-17-19
I love 14 and The Fold, so when I saw that Dead Moon was the 3rd in the Threshold series I was excited. And then I read the synopsis and realized that the characters I had grown to love in those books were not going to be part of this one. That's disappointing to say the least.
And the start of this one is a bit slow. So I was tempted to just stop listening, but I decided to ignore that it's supposed to be a sequel and stuck with it because I do love listening to Ray Porter and the action picked up a bit. But then the idiots were super idiotic and zombies and ugh.
Overall, as a stand alone story it's OK. Ray Porter's narration elevates it a bit. But I'm sad that the Threshold series didn't get a better 3rd story.

Historia
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

In 1914, the war which was to have been wrapped up by Christmas had - in reality - only just begun, as all sides entrenched themselves deeper into the Great War. Christmas Eve, 1914 follows one company of British officers as they rotate forward to spend their Christmas on the front lines, a mere 80 yards from the German guns. Upper- and working-class men and boys are thrown together into one trench and struggle to survive.

Joe Ledger - Number 10
Revisado: 11-11-18
I stumbled upon Joe Ledger in 2017 when I hunting for other books narrated by Ray Porter. I was wary, because horror is not typically my thing. I do like police procedurals and military thrillers, though. So I got Patient Zero and was hooked from the first paragraphs so well narrated by Porter. He's the best.
And then I binge listened to the rest of the series and had to wait, impatiently, for the next installment from Maberry. Deep Silence did not disappoint. Lots of action. Lots of sarcastic humor. Lots of suspense.
I could do with less violence and profanity, but for a fun, thrilling listen, you can't go wrong with Maberry and Porter.

Solid Bosch - Better Ballard
Revisado: 11-11-18
I'm a huge fan of Harry Bosch. He is my all time favorite police detective. Dark Sacred Night is a solid Bosch story on par with the entire series.
I enjoyed the first Renee Ballard novel quite a lot. I like her character and how she works. I thought at the time that I listened to her first story that she reminded me of Bosch in many ways. That Connelly paired her with Bosch in this story confirmed that impression. The work cases the same way. I like it.
This one would have gotten 5 stars if the narration had been handled differently. I've seen other reviews that expressed confusion and disappointment that Welliver and Lakin didn't read their characters within each person's narrative chapters. I think it lost some of their partnership that could have been strengthened with the joint reading. However, I get why it was narrated the way it was.
As always, looking forward to the next one from Michael Connelly.

Pretty Good, Pretty Good
Revisado: 06-25-18
I loved the Bobiverse series. Was hopeful that this follow-up by Dennis E. Taylor would measure up and for the most part it does. Taylor doesn't waste much time getting to the main gist of the story. He does a good job of character development through the book, he builds the tension in the plot, and brings it to a semi-strong finish. Semi- because he's left it somewhat open for a sequel. I could have been good with this being a stand-alone book. I'm OK with the possibility of a next chapter, too, though.
Ray Porter is my favorite narrator and he was excellent here, as usual. I love that Audible sprung for some effects to the voicing, which added greatly to the telling of the story.
