Beautiful
Revisado: 06-06-24
10/10 recommend. The narrator breathes life into each character as she weaves a beautiful and tragic tale that demonstrates the strength and character of early farmland settlers.

Historia
Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is 77 years old and crazy, standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-men-who-want-to-talk-about-Jesus crazy. She is also Elsa's best and only friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother's stories, in the Land of Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.

Another simple, yet profound book
Revisado: 02-27-17
I love Fredrick Backman's writing style. The story is simple, yet beautiful and profound at the same time. I believe every reader could see a bit of him/herself within the characters of this story. Narrator was also excellent.

Depressing humor
Revisado: 01-25-17
I loved the first chapter. It was beautiful and witty and relatable. After that the humor became darker and centered on the depressed delusions of a young man constantly high on speed. Perhaps it would be humorous to an audience who can relate to the sensations he describes, but I found it sorrowfully shallow. The writer clearly has a talent with words, but the subject matter was too morose for my taste.

Historia
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Beautiful story! Masterfully written and narrated.
Revisado: 06-30-16
My favorite book ever. Such beauty and simplicity in a complicated man. The author has a true gift for personification. The scene of the talking garage door, the use of the cat to portray unspoken emotion, and the voice given Sonia through her headstone - all lend a quaint, loving reality to the gruff exterior that is Ove.

Must read for anyone living or working with autism
Revisado: 04-14-16
As Mom to a nonverbal autistic son, I related deeply with this father's emotional challenges in enduring the havoc that autism creates while loving the child whose body creates it. Insights by Carly at the end of the book are helpful in understanding some of the behaviors my son exhibits.
