Another outstanding Perry Mason mystery, great plot as always. Top notch reading, the reader has a different voice for each character and does it very well, easy to understand too.

One of the better books in the Maisie Dobbs series

I really enjoyed this book. It was well written and interesting. The plot was well thought out and well presented. I didn't really like the end, when Maisie was back from Munich in England, it really wasn't a part of the book, getting the old gang back together, but a preparation for the next book in the series, and I am not a fan of doing that. Also, I really liked the reader, she was precise and very easy to understand, but there was some original German in the book and I was once fluent in that language and I wish the reader had bothered to get enough information so that se could say the German words close enough that they would be understandable. Wouldn't have taken all that much work.

Although this book focuses on the 1890s case of Plessy v. Ferguson, the narrative covers much more. It starts well before the civil war and follows several people who will later be instrumental in the time of the Plessy case. It has much detail and information not otherwise available or known. Thus, even though I believe I know a lot about the civil war and related history, almost all of the material in the book was new to me. Recommended at all levels.

I really enjoyed this book. It is long, but it never bogged down. The minute details about the building of the bridge were interesting. Even detours into politics, e.g., Tammany Hall, were of interest. I particularly enjoyed the story thread about the bends and how medicine of the time approached the problem.

There were interesting parts of the book, when the Justice was talking about his private life and in the few instances about the relationships on the Court. But most of the book consisted of fairly quick case reviews, containing no more information than one could get by reading the cases. For example, the Justice would say, I wrote the majority opinion and I held "x." Then Justice X wrote the dissent and s/he said: "y." I can't thus really recommend the book. There are better books about the Supreme Court and about other justices.

I got this as an audible original and I really liked it. It was short. It held my interest throughout. I liked the mystery. I particularly enjoyed the reading by Emily, which was most of the book. Well worth it at the price.

Isabel Keating is the best reader ever

What made the experience of listening to Summer Rental the most enjoyable?

Ms. Keating is able to adopt a unique voice for each character, distinct and clearly recognizable. This makes following along both easier, as the listener knows who's speaking by the voice but also very enjoyable. She also has the required traits of clear diction, no harshness, and a voice that is easy to understand.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The story was enjoyable and interesting as written, just not as compelling as some of Ms. Andrews other books. I think the story was as good as it could have been given the circumstances of the setting. I do wonder whether Ellis Sullivan will be successful with the life she has chosen for herself.

Have you listened to any of Isabel Keating’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, other Mary Kay Andrews books. They are equally outstanding.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was surprised by the reason for the money in the computer case. That was interesting.
