Historia
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

A new Lincoln for a new generation
Revisado: 11-06-22
This work by Jon Meacham “And There Was Light” is nothing less than fantastic. Mr. Meacham knows his subject well and the times in which he portrays. Having covered Jefferson,Jackson,FDR,Bush 43 and(in smaller amounts) Washington,TR,Wilson,Truman, and LBJ;he takes on arguably the greatest of them all to crate an enthralling story which connects with our present in many ways. It seemed shorter than I expected. Longer than his work on Jackson but shorter than his Jefferson and Bush biographies. However if you’re someone who doesn’t know the story of Lincoln or the era, this is definitely a great place to start.

The best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse.

A Masterpiece by a Master Storyteller
Revisado: 06-30-21
Anyone who loves a work of true art will appreciate this novel. It is(in my view) Ernest Hemingway’s greatest book. Full of love, action, pain and beauty. Told in simple yet passionate prose, this is what truly magnificent writers are able to get across to their intended audience.

Historia
Frank Lloyd Wright has long been known as a rank egotist who held in contempt almost everything aside from his own genius. Harder to detect, but no less real, is a Wright who fully understood, and suffered from, the choices he made. This is the Wright whom Paul Hendrickson reveals in this masterful biography: the Wright who was haunted by his father, about whom he told the greatest lie of his life.

A Biography (with other topics)
Revisado: 05-10-21
This book is fascinating, beguiling, strangely written but overall an interesting take on the greatest American architect ever produced. What I liked about it is that it’s well written and gives several new perspectives on FLW and his life and work, and he definitely does a great job of tearing down the myths Mr. Wright told in his Autobiographies;in particular his parents and the “true” story of their divorce. The one major issue I have is that Mr. Hendrickson spends WAY too much time on retelling the events of August 15,1914. It must have been about half the book when added up with both the chapters dealing with the incident as well as the mentions of it throughout. While a major event in his life,it’s not the main story. This book would’ve been better as a full “cradle to grave” biography in my view, but that’s not what this is. However, Mr. Hendrickson is a gifted enough writer that the story overall is compelling enough to be read. I would recommend it for people who don’t know much about Frank Lloyd Wright and want to get a “taste” of his life, times and achievements.

A Biography fit for an endlessly fascinating individual
Revisado: 04-26-19
If anyone is interested in the life and times of Thomas Jefferson but is worried about how complex the subject matter might be,do not be worried. Jon Meacham is a great writer and the type of historian who can keep the attention of a general reader. I loved that he quotes some of Jefferson’s writings at length and also tries not to gloss over his contradictions such as his hypocrisy of being a slave holder who loved freedom. While this book is quite long my only “complaint” would be that it seemed as if he were trying to keep the work at under 1,000 pages so as not to make it intimidating. Overall,if you enjoy either Jefferson, the early American era or politics in general, this is a fine book to pick up.

Historia
The Passage of Power follows Lyndon Johnson through both the most frustrating and the most triumphant periods of his career - 1958 to 1964. It is a time that would see him trade the extraordinary power he had created for himself as Senate Majority Leader for what became the wretched powerlessness of a Vice President in an administration that disdained and distrusted him. Yet it was, as well, the time in which the presidency, the goal he had always pursued, would be thrust upon him in the moment it took an assassin’s bullet to reach its mark.
