Historia
“My adult life can be divided into two distinct parts”, Eula Biss writes, “the time before I owned a washing machine and the time after.” Having just purchased her first home, the poet and essayist now embarks on a provocative exploration of the value system she has bought into. Through a series of engaging exchanges - in libraries and laundromats, over barstools and backyard fences - she examines our assumptions about class and property and the ways we internalize the demands of capitalism.

Interesting essays about money, wish the speaker used better audio equipment for recording (voice was okay, but sounded tinny and had too bright tenor)

If you like stories where women are actually people, look elsewhere.
I saw the good reviews just like you did. I rarely give poor ratings. I got through chapter five and was so done with this book, I had to write this. The story is slow moving, predictable, and bland. All the characters are stereotypical and one dimensional.
Here are snippets of the only women up through Chapter 5:
"Nora Devon was afraid of the television repairman."
Off to a great start there, wow. Nora, the damsel/victim woman who thinks of herself as a "plain, dumpy, nervous old maid" while the male characters see her as "hair dark and glossy, skin flawless, no makeup, gray eyes speckled with green, naturally beautiful". She is a frustrating character - recluse, oppressed, lots of trauma, non-confrontational, and "she had no experience standing up for herself". Regularly described as a "mouse instead of a cat" in this story. She has no agency whatsoever. And she is the main female character of this book.
The only other women mentioned are all being cheated on by one guy:
"... gorgeous Mexican girl in a string bikini. She was dark, superbly proportioned, and about 15 years younger than the doctor."
"... stunning blonde. She was wearing white slacks and a gaily striped white tube top. Half the men in the place were staring at her."
"... gorgeous girl, about 25... She looked Mexican, but with a measure of Chinese blood - very exotic. She was wearing a white halter top and white shorts, and she had the best legs Vince had ever seen."
The male characters are also boring. They are all described as well-built, strong men with some X level of aggressiveness.
Most of these good reviews must be from men and people who like thinking about golden retrievers.
