Reading Rights the Story

This is one I come back to, even if a first exposure was sullied or spoiled by the movie. As a teen, the exaggerated mirror of internal angst, and now, as a young woman, a tool for questioning grief beyond myself. Haunting and unfinished characters, the long development is equaled with a brief denouement. It cannot be recommended for all, but maybe at an intentional point in life. A singular gripe, considering the frame of a male narrator, acts as a decentering element at first, but is forgiven in its application as a window through a troubled mind in other ways.

With all this to say about the story, the author and his work, this narrator didn’t do it for me. Greatest recommendation is to read the text yourself, supplement with an audio version, but considering seeking it out elsewhere.

Left Hungry

This book presented itself with such great possibility for not just plot but meaning beyond words: an exploration of women’s experience through identity and food. Some moments felt underdeveloped or underutilized, with great opportunity to dive deeper. The structure of chapters being punctuated by analysis and history of recipes was wonderful, I found myself waiting for those few parts. It was a good listen, happy to have added it to the shelf!

A story in three parts

1. What the hell is going to happen?
2. What the hell is happening?
3. What the hell just happened?

Truly so impressed with every facet of the story and it’s telling. A plot and persistence that keeps a tight grip on the reader/listener. This haunting “Goop gone wrong” story is one that feels not too far from potential transgressions in beauty vs. biology in our late-stage capitalist commodification of humanity and genetics. Only wish I could have the experience of reading anew again and again, an Everlasting wish to endure its unobtainable beauty one more time.

Mommy Meh

I listed to audio books at work to keep me up and moving, but this nearly put me to sleep. Yes, a few shock moments and even a couple laughs, but dreadfully slow, no real action or plot development. This mommy dearest descent into question to carnivore canine status had so much potential- and that’s coming from a vegetarian- but fell flat.

A retold story, told yet again

A plot told and retold again, there is not so much surprise but the feeling of a boarded train you cannot get off, maybe even forced to watch it crash. While differentiation of characters and their voices is so important, there were a few jarring switches in tonality or tempo, maybe the biggest surprise or disappointment- but that can also be very individual. If I were to encounter it again, I might choose to read instead of listen.
