A bit funny in the first half and saddening in the end. A Quick witted accused former journo, in court, abuse of power, tragedy , a dictatorship, overthrown eventually by a military regime, discrimination of an adopted child, and a failure to accept responsibility by fathers and a protective mother who wouldn't tell the truth. It made me cry 😭 ... and became sadder and sadder and sadder ... I wouldn't recommend it to sensitive person

As a reader I went from judging Ova as a rigid person who wanted to have his was all the time, but I eventually accepted him for who he is. Still it revealed a lot of how judge and don't give others a chance to be who they are in their own way.

It's a beautiful story, that tells a story love, a story of freedom to be, a story about finding the good even in a rotten situation.

I enjoyed it and I'm a reading it again, I think I'll do this a couple of times for a long time.

Pathetic Performance

This book must be reproduced as an audio book. It's read with a wrong accent and bad pronunciation. Words like Thaba Nchu, are read as Thaba Ncu or Nxu, I think we have been taken for granted as listeners or readers.

Poppie is also pronounced badly as well, the fact that it's read wrongly over a hundred times is disappointing if not offensive. Pule is pronounced as Phule. Welkom is pronounced as Welkom instead of Velkom. Slaghuise is also pronounced terribly wrong, like there's a w somewhere in the mix.

At one point even the word surprised is also mispronounced, how pathetic. I should have stopped reading as soon as I reached chapter 17, but I forced myself listen till the end. Even the derogatory word boesman is fudged. I'd take offense if I was an author of this book. I'm disappointed at this Pathetic performance, I wouldn't blame the reader, she did her best but those who employed her should have known.

A sad tail about Black on Black hate/distraction/love and disappointment of devastation.

However love prevails in the face of hate ....my only hope is that we will get a sequel. To find out what happened to Baby when she grew up.

A father demanding to win at all costs

Where does Purple Hibiscus rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I found it hard to get going in the first chapters, but the story eventually grabbed me and at some point brought me to tears. Unlike a father lacking creativity of influencing his children to do better, it was refreshing to see a woman headed home thriving in difficult conditions, whilst she filled her home with love, she made her children raise the bar not out of fear but because the knew they have it within them to rise above, she natured their varying talents and promoted self expression though with limited resources. A story of parallels of religion, hypocrisy and love, poverty and abundance, a brief history lesson on Nigeria's political culture.

What other book might you compare Purple Hibiscus to and why?

I think because i have also read There was a country by Chinua Achebe, which to a certain extent complements the historical references to Nsuka, i found myself relating to Purple Hibiscus especially around the government, school leaders and activists, in Nsuka, as well as the Igbo people.

What does Lisette Lecat bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

There are great books i haven't finished because of poor performance, she may have made rare mistakes in places but she performed very well such that i could identify characters just based on her voice delivery.

Danny Glover and isiXhosa : water and oil

Would you consider the audio edition of Long Walk to Freedom to be better than the print version?

Had this version been read by a person who is fluent in South African indigenous languages in general and could read isiXhosa in particular it would have received a five star rating from me. It needs to be redone, as this inspiring sometimes sad, and mostly beautiful story has been hard done by the readers inability to pronounce South African words such as Veld or even isiXhosa, how was he expected to even utter the words such as ndiyindonda (I am a man) properly, though Bra-Danny Glover is a good english reader. Audible has pulled a fast one on me, I guess, if I could, I would return this version of the book to sender....unfortunately I am not sure how I could do that digitally.
