Tech crime mystery
Revisado: 02-28-25
Great read! Intriguing tech details. Excellent character development. Enough misdirection to make the reader work for the ending.
I hope to read more from this author!

Always a wonderful ride!
Revisado: 06-09-24
Although I enjoy different types of sci fi, Nathan Lowell writes stories with intrigue, detail, and great character insight, which is such a refreshing diversion from “cowboys in space.” I am happy to go anywhere Ishmael does!

For five grand a month and a million-dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year. But they didn't tell him about the pixies.

Is this a trailer?
Revisado: 03-22-23
Great short story. Good group cast. Not sure if the character who sounded like Trump was intentional, but it increased the irony of showbiz meme.
The cliff hanger ending is a bit abrupt. Perhaps this is a pilot for a book?

Gray doesn’t remember how to get home, and all the evidence says his people abandoned him after an unknown threat came calling. And that’s only the beginning.

Satisfying sci fi romp
Revisado: 01-13-23
This was tagged by some as YA. Maybe, but for me, 70 yr old retired editor and writer, it was just fun. I especially love snarky dialogue and this fits my expectations. I’ve kept on with the series enjoying the intrepid adventures of the diverse crew. The characters develop over the series.
I am disappointed though that the authors did not do a better job of filling in more of the background or provided a brief epilogue or timeline so those unfamiliar with the story prequel (Renegade series) had a bit more information.

Well done near future sci fi
Revisado: 01-01-23
Some have complained there is too much technical detail in these stories. I disagree. I like technical explanations. I find the details refreshing as opposed to endless starship battles.
Additionally the characters are three dimensional and emotionally developed so you can understand motives and actions. And there’s just enough snarky dialogue to lend reality and levity.

When Van gains rank as a Peacemaker, he becomes a bigger target for the criminals scattered among the stars. And he wouldn’t have it any other way. On a distant world under an alien sun, hunters and their companions—the Rovan—bond in a ritual as old as their civilization. And they are as cruel as the stars are many.

Great series
Revisado: 08-29-22
I’ve been rating the books in this series 5 stars. This one, while still well done, had a bit too much gore for me personally. I get that is the reality of war, but sometimes I have to skip ahead due to my emotional reaction. I look forward to listening to the other books in the series. Or reading them if it takes too long for the audio books to be released. Always LOVE Jeffery Kafer. And thanks for the bloopers. That was an unexpected pleasure!

Another Snarky AI!
Revisado: 08-21-22
Loved this! Snarky AI. Earthlings in over their heads. Banter that reminded me of the Bobiverse gang. Good humor (think Spaceship Next Door) and sarcastic but accurate summary of humanity’s ills. All delivered by one of my favorite narrators. Can’t wait for more adventures with this AI and friends.

For someone who has been confined to a wheelchair all of his life, the promise was impossible to ignore, but only a few would be invited to take part in the Alpha test of the new game. A pleasurable tale
Revisado: 08-17-22
Wonderful story and narration. A true balm and escape from the frustrating reality of RL. Clever, witty, and punny in the right doses. So sad to hear of the author’s passing, and I hope someone steps forward to complete the sequel. I await the next adventures of Gnobody and his intrepid party of travelers.

Unique and Worthy Read
Revisado: 04-06-22
I just completed books 2 and 3 of this series and I am glad I waited to review book 1 until I had read the other two. Books 2 and 3 received 5 stars from me. First, I love Ray Porter and was glad to listen to his narration.
As for the author and story, I was uncertain what to think after the first book. It seemed to miss some key points and wandered a bit, but nevertheless I was intrigued by the main character (Joe) and his friend (Vinny). I was intrigued by Joe's angst and his budding romance. I was intrigued enough to go for book 2, which was more developed and answered my previous questions. Same for book 3. The "world of time travel" for this series unfolds nicely, and there is still more to learn. I look forward to book 4.
Time travel can be done well or poorly. This is time travel (IMO) done quite well and with innovative and unique rules--that Joe must parse out on his own in the first book. I also liked that Joe is ordinary, a fact another reviewer took for timidity and weakness. I did not think that at all. As a matter of fact, I weary of superhero/heroine main characters. I really cannot identify with them.
