Still a skeptic but very interesting
Revisado: 10-29-20
Interesting stuff. I think he sells the idea that meat can be healthy for us fairly well and that complete vegan is maybe not the best path forward. That said, the argument that plants poison us seems shaky. One thing that would have helped me understand is less chemistry talk or at least explaining it better than a textbook. Maybe that is a tall order but at times it felt like a lot of chemical formulas and bonds and chains and acids and just...you space out. Still a very interesting read and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Historia
As President Trump’s national security advisor, John Bolton spent many of his 453 days in the room where it happened, and the facts speak for themselves. The result is one of the few White House memoirs to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the president, John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. What Bolton saw astonished him: a president for whom getting reelected was the only thing that mattered, even if it meant endangering or weakening the nation.

On Opposite Side of Aisle But Very Well Written
Revisado: 09-14-20
There isn’t a terrible amount that I would agree with John Bolton on as he typically and in here comes across with the typical American Imperialist mindset that we can control the world. That said, I found his book to be really well written and fascinating to hear a point of view that differs from my own. A lot of people think Trump is a problem because he is; but I enjoy that Bolton discusses the deficiencies in all aspects. This was in contrast the media’s representation that the book was a pseudo “Gotchya” as if Bolton was going to throw Don under the bus. Trump is capable of that all by himself. At the risk of rambling I’ll sum up...different views but I can respect a great book and well thought opinion when I see/hear it.

Wonderfully written and educational
Revisado: 08-28-20
I’ve read a few books about race at this point and I gotta say I really enjoyed this one to the extent one can enjoy learning about oppression.
As an author she really takes time to explain things that some other authors kind of expect white people to already know and acknowledge. I imagine if they already did we wouldn’t have the structures that we do. . .
Anyway...it is truly a wonderful book that is thought provoking and highly recommended.

Historia
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

Fair points but kind of aggressive
Revisado: 08-18-20
I’ll start by saying that the book has some merit. There for sure is a lot of systemic racism and the type of racism that goes unseen. The crux of the argument that makes me lean towards the author’s approach as being too “aggressive” or “forward” for attempt at wording. She argues that individualism is part of what keeps whites empowered and people of color not so much so. I could agree but asking to change the American mentality from being individualist to collective is a steep order. While yes the constitution was written by white men and maybe they had a different view of “all” than we do today the theory we are shooting for today is unchanged. Racism is very real and alive but putting the entire burden of it solely on white people and saying that “maybe if you didn’t do this”. At a certain point I’d someone is racist then don’t hang out with them and they will have no friends. The arguments that it is on white people to struggle and figure it out. They simply won’t do that. If our country wants change then we all must take part. You can’t have one side wanting individualism and another wanting collectivism...it will just be finger pointing the whole time. Overall I value the book and it’s opinions...I just think it’s quite aggressive and I think you could take this topic and reach more people by taking a chill pill.

Historia
Being a parent is usually all about giving of yourself to foster your child's growth and development. But what happens when this isn't the case? Some parents dismiss the needs of their children, asserting their own instead, demanding attention and reassurance from even very young children. This may especially be the case when a parent has narcissistic tendencies or narcissistic personality disorder.

Good for facts
Revisado: 07-23-19
It is a really good book that describes narcissism and what it looks like if you’re. It sure that is what you are dealing with in a parent. The ideas though on what to do with that situation seem a bit shallow and there is a lot of what just seems like arts and crafts activities to “discover yourself”. It was great for describing narcissism but beyond that.

A brilliant and utterly original thinker, Andrew Solomon's journey began from his experience of being the gay child of straight parents. He wondered how other families accommodate children who have a variety of differences: families of people who are deaf, who are dwarfs, who have Down syndrome, who have autism, who have schizophrenia, who have multiple severe disabilities, who are prodigies, who commit crimes, who are transgender.

Revisado: 07-14-19
It is a fantastic read. I don’t know if it was because some of the chapters had no bearing on my life and that is why it came off really dry in those parts. There were some parts (particularly the last 6 hours...couldn’t put it down). Fantastic read if you’re into just learning about everything and anything!

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Not a bad listen just a ton of information
Revisado: 05-11-17
The format is a ton of dates and kind of feels all over the place which makes it a bit harder to follow in audio format. I imagine the hard copy would be easier with margin notes and such. It is just a ton of information that is almost squeezed into a small space.
