Historia
In 1912, scientist Marie Curie spent two months on the British seaside at the home of Hertha Ayrton, an accomplished mathematician, inventor, and suffragette. At the time, Curie was in the throes of a scandal in France over her affair with Paul Langevin, which threatened to overshadow the accomplishment of her second Nobel Prize. Performed by Kate Mulgrew and Francesca Faridany at the Minetta Lane Theatre, this play by Lauren Gunderson is an ode to two remarkable women.

Great series, great narration, great deal!
Revisado: 04-24-19
My hubby picked this out as a gift as I like sci-fi that's funny. This series is great. I listened to 80+ hours straight (with stops, but I didn't hop in to another book to take a break). I love stumbling on a series that is complete and fun. The characters made you care about them.
The narration was fabulous. I love Kubu's voice. All the characters sucked you in and made you forget that it was being narrated.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this series. And really, 80 hours for a single credit....you can't pass that up.

Historia
The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

Wow! What a book. I loved this story. It had a compelling story, interesting characters and was well narrated. I was invested in the characters and felt for them through their ups and downs. I definitely shed some tears on occasion.

Not what I expected but great nonetheless
Revisado: 07-13-13
When I first began listening I wasn't sure I wasn't going to enjoy the story or the narrator. I'm not one for dry humor and this was dripping with it. Additionally at first you think the narrator is just doing a deadpan reading of the story. But you soon learn this is indeed the character. Alex is not a poetic, verbose person. By the end of the story you get that you've got insight into a different thought process and it's fascinating. Alex has quite defined ideas of right and wrong and the ways of the world. While you could listen to the story and think "why would he handle the situation that way, most people wouldn't" you realize soon enough that there was no other way for Alex.
I really enjoyed the end of the book. It was a different perspective and I was invested in the characters.
I think people who enjoy investing themselves in a character would enjoy the book. Also those who are interested in exploring morals of right and wrong and the choices we make.

Many consider this rich social commentary to be Jane Austen's finest novel. It is certainly among her more famous ones. Austen sets her entertaining study of manners and misconceptions against the backdrop of a class-conscious society in 18th-century England.

Not sure I can finish....
Revisado: 03-07-13
I don't normally write reviews midway through a book. But I've read Pride and Prejudice a hundred times so I know how it's going to end. This review is about this particular reading of it. It just isn't my favorite narration. I'm half way through and deciding whether I can listen to anymore. It's not that I'm expecting Colin Firth to read the book, but Flo does not bring me in to Jane Austen's work. She has some subtle variations between characters but it is really just a book reading. I'm finding it distracting to listen to her. If this is your first introduction to Jane Austen DO NOT listen to this version.

Historia
The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of 30 million souls, to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet.

Not into zombie books? You should still read this.
Revisado: 03-07-13
I'm not a big reader of zombie books. I don't particularly care for scary books because I like to be able to sleep at night without leaving a light on. I do enjoy a good "end of the world as we know it" book. And this book falls within that category. Enough zombie to make it interesting and plausible. But not enough to make me fear for my brain if I closed my eyes. I loved getting the different perspectives with each chapter. I just wish it wasn't abridged.
The reading by different actors was spectacular and was a great way to experience the story. I've listened to the store multiple times because I enjoyed it so much.

Glad to be a woman of our time!
Revisado: 03-07-13
It's books like this that start me preaching to my daughter that we should be thankful to be a woman today and in the US. While the premise is a bit forced you can see where there are parallels to what women around the world face today. I think we always feel like life will get better in the future, this shows us another outcome.
Overall I enjoyed the story itself. By midway I wasn't sure how many more similes I could listen to. Everything was compared to something else. I wonder if I would have reacted differently to reading it in print versus hearing it.
Claire Danes did a great job reading the story. I would listen to her perform again on a different book. I loved when she would break into the "Aunt" voice.

Great Book!
Revisado: 11-05-12
What a great book! After finishing Xenocide I wasn't sure I could handle another Ender book. Instead of letting the reader find the lessons and truths within the text I felt like I was back in college listening to a lit professor. While Ender's Shadow does go off on political tangents, there's at least enough action and interesting character development to keep me entertained.
It's a great follow-up to Ender's Game. This book would not be appropriate for younger children however.

Why we think it’s a great listen: It’s easy to say that when it comes to sci-fi you either love it or you hate it. But with Ender’s Game, it seems to be you either love it or you love it.... The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Enter Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, the result of decades of genetic experimentation.

Amazing Story
Revisado: 10-03-12
Would you listen to Ender's Game again? Why?
I would definitely listen to Ender's Game again. It was a great story. I raced through it the first time that I'd like to go back and listen to it with more attention to certain plot lines.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved that while these were brilliant children they were still children. I have a son around the same age as Ender at the beginning of the novel and imagining him in the battle school was scary but intriguing. It certainly brought me into the story very quickly.
Which scene was your favorite?
I like the scenes when he's besting the others even though he and his squad are the underdogs.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Absolutely! I listen to audiobooks in the car and would find myself lingering in the driveway until I could finish a particular scene.
Any additional comments?
Great book! An interesting ending. I think this is great for adults and younger readers. There is mature content with the violence.
