Historia
In 2011, three successful and highly educated women fell head over heels for the brilliant and charming Ethan Schuman. Unbeknownst to the others, each exchanged countless messages with Ethan, staying up late into the evenings to deepen their connections with this fascinating man. His detailed excuses about broken webcams and complicated international calling plans seemed believable, as did last minute trip cancellations. After all, why would he lie? Ethan wasn't after money—he never convinced his marks to shell out thousands of dollars for some imagined crisis.

Historia
Amanda and Clay head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they’ve rented for the week. But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and G. H. are an older couple—it’s their house, and they’ve arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area—with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service—it’s hard to know what to believe.

Beautiful tale with things to think about
Revisado: 12-25-23
I really enjoyed listening to this, I enjoyed it more than the movie as it gave more insight to the characters and motivations. There are a few reviews that didn’t care for the ending, but I felt that it ended with a moment of hope. That seemed a nice way to end a dark story.

Historia
An AI overseer and a human crew arrive on a distant planet to salvage an ancient UN starship. The overseer is unhappy. The crew, well, they're certainly no A-team. Not even a C-team on the best of days. And worse? Urmahon Beta, the planet, is at the ass-end of nowhere. Everybody expects this to be a long, ugly, and thankless job. Then it all goes disastrously wrong. What they thought was an uninhabited backwater turns out to be anything but empty.

Recording/narration not up to audible standards
Revisado: 07-15-22
I tried, I really tried, but I finally gave up. Narration is a skill and not just every popular person can narrate a book effectively. I searched for another version of this book with a different narrator but could only find an abridged version — but based on the sample, a really great narrator. Really disappointed audible didn’t do a better job with choosing a narrator. The narrator is so far out of their depth in this performance it is embarrassing.

Historia
When Dr. Will Cooke, an idealistic young physician just out of medical training, set up practice in the small rural community of Austin, Indiana, he had no idea that much of the town was being torn apart by poverty, addiction, and life-threatening illnesses. But he soon found himself at the crossroads of two unprecedented health-care disasters: a national opioid epidemic and the worst drug-fueled HIV outbreak ever seen in rural America. Confronted with Austin’s hidden secrets, Dr. Cooke decided he had to do something about them.

Talks more about himself than the crisis
Revisado: 03-04-22
At least 50% percent of the book is the author saying me, me, me; around 30% is author’s relationship with his god; another 15% reads like a public service announcement and the remaining 5% really gets into the crisis that occurred. I grew up in Southern Indiana the next county over from Scott County. I wanted to read the story of the people. The book’s author is so egocentric, it’s hard to see the real people who struggled and were affected (as in the addicts and the patients), rather than the caricatures formed by the author’s overriding religious view.

Too much graphic violence for Firefly Universe
Revisado: 10-18-20
I love Firefly — but the graphic torture scenes in this are over the top and not in line with firefly. I want to like this series but so far the violence overshadows the characters.

Story derailed toward end
Revisado: 07-31-20
I really enjoyed this book until the final quarter. The book took such an unexpected turn toward the end that I could imagine publishers saying ‘we need more here, how about adding something spicy!’ No spoilers, but the unexpected turn derailed the story and just didn’t make sense. The first three quarters of the book went one way and the last quarter went another. I did enjoy the historical detail.

Historia
Sometimes the worst storms aren't from Mother Nature, and sometimes the worst nightmares aren't the ones in our heads. Mike Mitchell, an average New Yorker already struggling to keep his family together, suddenly finds himself fighting just to keep them alive when an increasingly bizarre string of disasters starts appearing on the world's news networks. As both the real world and the cyber world come crashing down, bending perception and reality, a monster snowstorm cuts New York off from the world, turning it into a wintry tomb where nothing is what it seems.

Please note 2 minor event spoilers.
I found this book listed in a top
apocalyptic fiction list, and as I had read all of the other books on the list, I was thrilled to find one I hadn’t read. I looked at on-line reviews and they were positive, so I used my credit and started listening. I am so disappointed in this book. Lack-luster predictable story with paper thin stereotypical characters using bordering-on-lecture dialogue to educate the reader and move the story along — so many better ways to get that information out there without turning characters into flat one-dimensional educational devices. The unbelievable in this story isn’t the cyberstorm, it’s events such as characters apparently believing that taking pictures of villainous purse snatchers is a real deterrent to crime in a city with a deteriorating infrastructure. I’m befuddled by the positive reviews. I rarely don’t finish a book I’m listening too — I can only think of one in recent memory and that was due to an annoying narrator — but this one, I just couldn’t go any further when they got to diaper rash as a serious concern in a world without police, electricity or water. I was done.

Historia
We know it simply as "the pill", yet its genesis was anything but simple. Jonathan Eig's masterful narrative revolves around four principal characters: the fiery feminist Margaret Sanger, who was a champion of birth control in her campaign for the rights of women but neglected her own children in pursuit of free love; the beautiful Katharine McCormick, who owed her fortune to her wealthy husband, the son of the founder of International Harvester and a schizophrenic.

Fascinating Story -- Below Par Narration
Revisado: 03-31-15
Would you listen to The Birth of the Pill again? Why?
I might read it again, but I don't think I'd listen to this again. The narration is distracting.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Birth of the Pill?
I enjoyed the characterization of Margaret Sanger. I enjoy the mix of science and history.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Gayle Hendrix?
Anyone else -- this was an extremely odd narration -- the narration was a mix of robotic monotone with slightly odd pronunciations and an inappropriately placed questioning lilt -- often found in the middle of a statement. Science doesn't have to be read in a boring monotone.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I could only take the narration a bit at a time. I only listened to the entire book because I found the topic so interesting.
