Historia
Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandment finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading. Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, becomes something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future. Except the discovery of their bond would mean the death of each of them. There’s still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win. That’s how war works, right?

I’ve read a lot of SciFi, to the point where I was nearly numb. This was fresh, and I am renewed.

Historia
In the collection's marvelous title story, two aging vampires in a sun-drenched Italian lemon grove find their hundred-year marriage tested when one of them develops a fear of flying. In "The Seagull Army Descends on Strong Beach, 1979", a dejected teenager discovers that the universe is communicating with him through talismanic objects left in a seagull's nest. "Proving Up" and "The Graveless Doll of Eric Mutis" find Russell veering into more sinister territory.

Excellent Narration, Fresh stories

I usually prefer longer works of fiction, especially with fantasy, but each of these stories was a wonderful experience that I will not soon forget. The different narrators added a lot to the experience as well.

When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

Great Lighthearted Sci-fi
Revisado: 03-23-23
It mentions this in the authors note, but this book is a great palate cleanser. There are a lot of books that try to be broody and deep and take themselves too seriously. This book has fun, and is fun to read. By keeping things simple, it’s a nice return to the simple love of a good story.
TLDR: simple meal, well done.

Historia
After a brutal battle with the underworld that nearly destroyed him, Locke and his trusted sidekick, Jean, fled the island city of their birth and landed on the exotic shores of Tal Verrar to nurse their wounds. But even at this westernmost edge of civilization, they can’t rest for long - and are soon back to what they do best: stealing from the undeserving rich and pocketing the proceeds for themselves. This time, however, they have targeted the grandest prize of all: the Sinspire, the most exclusive and heavily guarded gambling house in the world.

Great Story! Worth a read from anyone
Revisado: 12-20-22
Even if you are not a fan of the avatar universe, this is a well paced and beautifully written story. It’s my personal favorite take on the chosen one trope, where the main character is torn by the expectations thrust upon her, and how others seek to benefit more from the appearances than action.
She is a great protagonist and this story is also lgbt+ positive! I thoroughly enjoyed my time.

Historia
After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos.

Characters are not interesting. Boring narration.
Revisado: 11-10-22
This book almost made me fall asleep with its poor narration. Not to mention the boring story.
This feels a lot like a first draft. There’s a line of thinking and rational, but it doesn’t extend to the characters. Varg suffers the worst from this. He’s just not interesting. None of them are.
The world building relies too heavily on what the author needs to happen, rather than feeling like an immersive world.
I stuck through the whole book for this review. It’s a shallow read. Sure, it’s decorated with a lot of trappings of Norse Mythology “but the gods are dead”, except that it’s a boring story.

Decent story ruined by narrator
Revisado: 01-30-19
I’m going to be honest and concise. The audio performance by Susan Duerden is so bad, it made me hate this book.
I really did try to get over it, but she’s so bad. Emphasizing all the wrong words and the way she slows down mid sentence annoys me.
I’m sure she’s done many other books, but with this one, it was completely detrimental to my experience. I couldn’t finish it. At all. Good riddance.
