Historia
Scott Bradley James arrives in Annapolis, Maryland, as a plebe in the class of 1941 without a terribly good idea why he wants to be a naval officer, other than that his father was a sailor, and he wants to see the world, whatever that means. Scott and his roommate become fast friends, and, after surviving scrapes of their own making, the two fetch up at Pearl Harbor. War is brewing, and their class has graduated early. They have been sent to battle stations.

Herman Wouk-ess - Which I Loved
Revisado: 03-20-25
I’ve listened to War and Remembrance and Winds of War three times. I love those books! The Restless Wave felt like it was cut from the same cloth as those Herman Wouk novels. I love the history of WW2 and the education on how the Navy and government operates - all interestingly woven together through fictional characters and their lives. Well done, Admiral Stavritis!
But now I want the next book(s). Please get cracking, I need to know what happens to the characters!

Historia
This collection of William L. Shirer’s radio broadcasts tells the vivid story of WWII and brings the suspense of the times to life for today’s audience. As the first journalist hired by CBS to cover the war in Europe, Shirer compiled two and a half years’ worth of wartime broadcasts including Hitler’s invasion of Austria, the armistice between France and Nazi forces in June of 1940, daily roundups of news from Paris, Vienna, Berlin, London and Rome, documenting the conditions of these countries under invasion.

Fascinating
Revisado: 03-07-24
This is a fascinating book. The propaganda machine in complete control of the news as presented to the German people. Because we know what was really happening in Nazi Germany, it’s all the more fascinating to hear how it was spun to the people.
And of course as always, Grover Gardner is excellent.

Historia
Little River, New York, 1994: April Sawicki is living in a motorless motorhome that her father won in a poker game. Failing out of school, picking up shifts at a local diner, she’s left fending for herself in a town where she’s never quite felt at home. When she “borrows” her neighbor’s car to perform at an open mic night, she realizes her life could be much bigger than where she came from. After a fight with her dad, April packs her stuff and leaves for good, setting off on a journey to find a life that’s all hers.

Unbelievable Story and Characters
Revisado: 09-10-21
This story and main character are flimsy and unbelievable. The logic April uses to make one stupid decision after another is frustrating. And the characters she meets along the way are utterly ridiculous. Take Margot, who supposedly loves April, doesn’t once offer to take her in when she’s 16 and living alone in a trailer. Ethan, Robert and Adam all love her after like three weeks - are we supposed to believe that closed-off April is so charming that people instantly love her? She finds all kinds of good people willing to help her along the way, and yet she leaves them all - and for what? As the reader, I couldn’t believe any of it because I wasn’t given enough information to understand why she feels and acts the way she does.

Leo Tolstoy's classic story of doomed love is one of the most admired novels in world literature. Generations of readers have been enthralled by his magnificent heroine, the unhappily married Anna Karenina, and her tragic affair with dashing Count Vronsky.

Thank you, Maggie
Revisado: 05-25-21
I read Anna Karenina 15 years ago and recall it being difficult to get through. There are long and seemingly drawn out sections that were boring when I read them. However, with Maggie reading, it was very enjoyable and I picked up a lot more of the story than when I read it the first time. Thank you!

Historia
Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II, which begins with The Winds of War and continues here in War and Remembrance, stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

Best WW2 Historical Fiction Book Ever Written
Revisado: 08-31-19
I just read Winds of War and War and Remembrance for the first time. It touched my soul. So well written with historical facts and fictional characters intertwined. Expertly developed, I'll miss the characters in the book. The German perspective through Von Roon's eyes was interesting, as it gave some insight into how a society could have followed a man like Hitler. How could the atrocities against the Jews have happened? We can never forget and this wonderful work of art from Herman Wouk will help generations to come remember.
Kevin Pariseau - bravo! The subtleties in his voice to distinguish between many characters was outstanding.

Historia
When beautiful, reckless Southern belle Zelda Sayre meets F. Scott Fitzgerald at a country club dance in 1918, she is seventeen years old and he is a young army lieutenant stationed in Alabama. Before long, the "ungettable" Zelda has fallen for him despite his unsuitability: Scott isn't wealthy or prominent or even a Southerner, and keeps insisting, absurdly, that his writing will bring him both fortune and fame. Her father is deeply unimpressed.

I can't bare to finish
Revisado: 09-30-17
After reading Paris Wife, I was intrigued about the era and the famous creatives. I had high hopes for this book, but 1/3 of the way into it I find it's just so terribly boring. The southern drawl of the reader, while perhaps accurate, is also difficult to listen to.
