This audio version of The Croxley Master is a faithful and unabridged adaptation with superb production values, fine acting and excellent sound/sound effects that takes the reader on an engaging adventure full of the atmosphere and excitement of the ring. Arthur Conan Doyle was himself an amateur boxer and a medical trainee working in the north of England as is the protagonist and this personal detail brings the story to life focusing not so much on the fierce aspects of the game but on the shared camaraderie and excitement of the audience - including the miners’ dogs who get in for half-price!

The story is populated with a range of memorable and well-developed characters and one of the major strengths of this audio version is how three actors (Jill Dopp, John Sadoway and Adam McLaughlin) so convincingly represent the personalities and accents of a good dozen or so individuals. I especially like the choice of a female narrator and Ms Dopp does an excellent job of it.

There is a lot of tongue-in cheek humour in this yarn but also a serious consideration of the impact of the industrial revolution on the English landscape and townships and on the lives of its folk. Doyle clearly believes that “manly” sports are character building and a reflection of the true British spirit and, while this thinking may be dated, his thoughts flow rapidly from his imagination imbuing the “main event”, the boxing match, with a liveliness and urgency that is very entertaining.

Highly recommended.

What a wonderful collection. Beautifully read by Adjoa Andoh. And that silky smooth voice and subtle emotion of Anton Lesser. I could listen to him reading poetry all day.

This BBC series is intriguing, historically interesting and a lot of fun. Falco is a bit like Philip Marlowe meets Ancient Rome with a dry, cheeky wit that Anton Lesser, the king of narrators, captures perfectly. All the actors are terrific and bring their characters to life especially Fritha Goodey & Anna Madeley who play Falco's love, Helela, and Trevor Peacock, who plays his father. I know I will listen to this more than once and my only regret is that the BBC didn't do more of the books with the same cast.

Charles Dickens and Anton Lesser are surely a match made in heaven. Lesser's ability to convincingly voice dozens of characters and his sympathetic telling of the story are extraordinary and a joy to listen to. Although openly sentimental, a Dickensian trait, 'Nicholas Nickelby' embodies Dickens' passion for social reform and resulted in most of the terrible private schools depicted in the novel being closed down. This is an iconic novel and a terrific audio performance.

An enchanting story and parable for children of all ages, which is made even more delightful by that master of narrators, Anton Lesser.

Although this is the second book in the series, it is the first I've read and I found it intriguing. I liked the plotting and the characters and will read more of the series. As for Anton Lesser, what a brilliant narrator. He could read the phone book and I'd be happy.

The Matthew Shardlake novels and characters become more engaging with each volume and, in this audio version, they are brought brilliantly to life by master narrator, Anton Lesser. The range of characters (both male and female) in Mr Lesser's repertoire is as astonishing as his range of emotions from fear and anger to deeply moving sadness and regret. in this volume, I especially enjoyed the development of the main characters, particularly Matthew's emerging awareness that parts of his life may need adjusting. Can't wait to see what happens next.

I was looking forward to hearing this book but I never got through it as the narration was driving me crazy. Mr Laurence has a pleasant voice but chops sentences up with pauses that make it sound like he's finished. Then he continues on and you've got to piece the next bit to what you've already heard. He does this 3 or 4 times in a sentence making it exhausting to listen to. I gave up 1/3 of the way through. Where's Anton Lesser when you need him!?

Anton Lesser was born to read Dickens. He imbues each and every character with its own voice and personality and captures the comedy and caricature of Dickens' world as well as its darker elements. This is a classic tale of innocence and corruption in a brutal time.
