Boring, Rote Recitation of Events
Revisado: 11-05-24
The concept of this book is really compelling - a history of the close relationship between law enforcement and criminals, and all the ways this close relationship has lead to some morally and ethically questionable outcomes. The execution is a rapid fire list of disconnected names and events that just leaves the listener exhausted and confused. It felt like listening to the babbling of a paranoid schizophrenic, impossible to track how one fever dream thought has lead to another. It doesn’t help that the narrator’s flat affect gives the impression of listening to an AI bot. I’d love to find a more comprehensible book on this topic because the essence of what’s been blendered together in this book seems fascinating.

A Good Message But Written At A High School Level
Revisado: 09-04-23
It’s an important message and the idea is strong, but the writing and context was at a high school level, making it feel a bit simplistic for adult readers. It didn’t help that the audio performance tone was reminiscent of an after school special. If you have a young adult in your house who you’re trying to discourage from drinking, though, I think it could be a really powerful tool.

Too Dense For Audio; Will Patten Almost Saves It
Revisado: 06-26-19
Killers of the Flower Moon is a dense narrative, with granular details about the Osage countryside, people and history. It reads well, but on audiobook it can drone a bit... It had a difficult time holding my attention. It also doesn't help that there are three narrators, two of which seem to be reading the words for sound rather than meaning. Only Will Patten manages to breathe some life into his section... he does a masterful job of making the dense information accessible and entertaining.

Historia
In a Tokyo suburb, a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife’s missing cat—and then for his wife as well—in a netherworld beneath the city’s placid surface. As these searches intersect, he encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists. Gripping, prophetic, and suffused with comedy and menace, this is one of Haruki Murakami’s most acclaimed and beloved novels.

Fantastic Book, Distracting Performance
Revisado: 04-23-19
The Wind Up Bird Chronicle is a true masterpiece. Fanciful while truthful, imaginative and grounded, emotional and funny. The characters are well rounded and unique, and the story was epic and devastating. I loved everything about it.
The performance, however, was one of the worst I've heard. The actor was a hambone to the first degree, applying a Saturday morning cartoon style characterization to everyone except the narrator, which was incredibly distracting. For example, a character whose name translates to Bull River was for some reason interpreted to be a cross between Gilbert Gottfried and Jerry Lewis. Horrible.
If you can find a different performer, go with that version. The book is a must read (or hear).

Beautiful, Poetic, Devastating
Revisado: 03-16-17
Bruce Wagner's brilliance is in his ability to make the unlikely and extreme both believable and relatable. With I Met Someone, he's found a beautiful metaphor to illustrate all the nuanced ways that narcissists consume the ones they love, with one character going so far as to literally steal his son's heart. Julianne Moore's performance is amazing, as good as anything she's ever done.
