interesting story
Revisado: 06-23-23
With no personal experience in the Sugar lifestyle, the story was very interesting. I appreciate the writer's honesty and vulnerability. At times, I found myself frustrated with the relationship and toxicity, needing to remind myself how challenging it is when you're in the throws of it. I loved being a part of the writer's personal growth. I didn't care for the female narrator, but didn't bother me enough to stop listening.

tear jerker
Revisado: 10-27-22
I loved this book. It was so hard to put down. I enjoyed the style of changing point of views for each chapter. I didn't initially love the female narrator, but quickly figured out how perfect her tone was for the character. The emotions in the book were palpable throughout, and I had to hold back the tears several times. The last couple words unleashed a flood gate that I was not expecting. Such a great book, with a good ending.

intriguing and shocking storyline
Revisado: 10-10-22
I personally really enjoyed the story within the story and appreciated the change in voice for each part. I did start to get bored of the sex scenes and they often felt like an unnecessary addition to the story. I found myself saying WTF at times, because parts were so disturbing.
It's important to note that the ending sucked. I hated the letter from the wife. I'm not sure what the author was trying to portray, and it just wasn't believable. The end of the story felt like a predictable, rushed wrap up.

Revisado: 10-10-22
It took me a while to get into the book. I wasn't expecting the accent. But, when I finally got into it, I couldn't stop listening. A unique story line, but a little bit predictable at times. I really enjoyed it regardless.

I am so glad Ashley wrote a second book. I loved hearing the rest of her story. I really enjoyed the perspective from the adult version of herself, as it sheds light on the Foster Care system in a different way.

tragic story, helpful perspective
Revisado: 09-20-22
I found this book, after attending a training that Ashley spoke at. Although that was a quite a whil ago, I remebwr being really moved by her. As someone who works in the Child Welfare system, this story was hard to hear. It challenged me to think critically about how much is shared with children and what is truly in their best interest. Just a heartbreaking story, but with a positive outcome.

Ruth Wariner was the 39th of her father's 42 children. Growing up on a farm in rural Mexico, where authorities turned a blind eye to the practices of her community, Ruth lives in a ramshackle house without indoor plumbing or electricity. At church, preachers teach that God will punish the wicked by destroying the world and that women can ascend to heaven only by entering into polygamous marriages and giving birth to as many children as possible.

I really enjoyed reading this story, despite the hardship of the writers life. It's heartbreaking to hear and difficult to understand why someone would choose to live this lifestyle. If you find polygamy and cults interesting, I highly recommend this book. The readers voice is pleasant and easy to listen to.

Tiffany can't avoid being funny: it's just who she is. But The Last Black Unicorn is so much more than a side-splittingly hilarious collection of essays - it's a memoir of the struggles of one woman who came from nothing and nowhere. A woman who was able to achieve her dreams by reveling in her pain and awkwardness, showing the world who she really is, and inspiring others through the power of laughter.

I like Tiffany, but not this book...
Revisado: 08-19-22
I was excited to 'read' this book, because I like Tiffany's acting. Unfortunately I found this book extremely difficult to get through. The format is based off topics, rather than chronological order, which was difficult to piece together at times. I would not consider myself a prude, and personally swear more than I should, but the swearing seemed excessive at times. I also struggled when she talked about Roscoe, as her language was not inclusive and felt very disrespectful to the disabled community.
