...stick with it!
Revisado: 12-18-18
The opening of this audiobook comes off as a fairly long winded advert for Base Camp. I am not here to say it *isn't* one, but that it abates and, after a little bit of contextualizing (and arguably, some proselytizing) the great advice starts to come to the fore. The performance is great, Eileen Stevens has a great voice and she makes the occasional "fuck that" which are found throughout the book resonate. I would like to give this book to my boss but actually think the "fuck that"s and "bullshit"s would be off-putting to them. Maybe we can get a censored version of the book (harhar)?
Overall it was insightful and has lead me to consider a lot about my work that I hadn't thought of in direct enough a fashion. And the advert at the front (and throughout the book) have kind of got me thinking I need to look into Base Camp too.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

It's good until it isn't; you'll prob' like it.
Revisado: 01-03-18
if you liked The Martian you'll probably like this. Weir isn't as adept at writing a main female lead and dips into some painfully tropic teenage fantasy stuff with Jasmine's character. the science is good--while I don't feel like I 100% understand the layout of Artemis as well as I would hope I understood the action and the pacing and the setup, so, no harm there. My only real issue is with character and in so far as there isn't anything heinously sexist about the characters I can't say you should stay away from the story for that reason. It tiptoes along the lines of what I want and what I expect from authors writing female characters and sometimes finds itself on the right side of pandering and other times on the wrong side of male-gaze crap.
Don't let me tell you what to think about it. Its worth a listen as it *I* basically entertaining.
Dawson's performance is also interesting and while a fan of much of her work I would not have imagined her doing an audiobook--I can't day I am 100% a fan of the performance but she got it down in some parts really well and I would listen to another of her performances to help better make my mind up.

Historia
The late Chilean writer Roberto Bolaño has been called the García Marquez of his generation. The Savage Detectives is a hilarious and sexy, meandering and melancholy, companionable and complicated road trip through Mexico City, Barcelona, Israel, Liberia, and finally the desert of northern Mexico. It is the first of Bolaño's two giant works, with 2666, to be translated into English and is already being hailed as a masterpiece.

Bolaño gets another great treatment
Revisado: 07-08-17
Bolaño writes a modern classic and gets a perfectly suited reading from two readers who truly make it work better than one should or would expect. More readers could have made the middle section pop a bit more but at the same time that can be very jarring and very risky. In the end, I am more than glad they went the route they did and picked these two talents to bring this to audio format.

Historia
Begun in the 1980s and worked on until the author's death, in 2003, Woes of the True Policeman is Roberto Bolaño's last, unfinished novel. The novel follows Oscar Amalfitano - an exiled Chilean university professor and widower - through the maze of his revolutionary past, his relationship with his teenage daughter, Rosa, his passion for a former student, and his retreat from scandal in Barcelona. Forced to leave Barcelona for Santa Teresa, a Mexican city close to the U.S. border where women are being killed in unprecedented numbers, Amalfitano soon begins an affair with Castillo, a young forger of Larry Rivers paintings.

Like a window into the soul of the bolaño-verse.
Revisado: 08-01-16
This elucidates so much of what is often unsaid in the narratives of 2666 and Savage Detectives. As its own piece, a rumination, we see into Bolaño's mind and it is glorious to see, as if happening contemporaneously with our reading this book is Bolaño's persistent formulation of these characters and themes.

Long renowned as one of the smartest writers on the loose, David Foster Wallace reveals himself in Consider the Lobster to be also one of the funniest. In this program, he ranges far and farther in his search for the original, the curious, or the merely mystifying. He discovers the World's Largest Lobster Cooker at the Maine Lobster Festival and confronts the inevitable question just beyond the butter-or-cocktail-sauce quandary.

the performance was great and it made an often sporadic style clear, however, this is certainly best read. I enjoyed it most when I was reading along wit a copy of the book. I will think about this story for along time and surely it's value to literature at large can't be understated.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.
