Historia
After a bizarre and disturbing incident at the funeral of matriarch Marian Savage, the McCray and Savage families look forward to a restful and relaxing summer at Beldame, on Alabama's Gulf Coast, where three Victorian houses loom over the shimmering beach. Two of the houses are habitable, while the third is slowly and mysteriously being buried beneath an enormous dune of blindingly white sand. But though long uninhabited, the third house is not empty. Inside, something deadly lies in wait.

Captivating writing and excellent narration!
Revisado: 07-01-20
McDowell has created a top-notch horror story that simmers with creepy dread rom the very beginning, but still managed to be a delicious slow burn. It's a unique story, and he has really breathed life into every character. R. C. Bray's narration doesn't always "click" for me, although it's never distracting or unpleasant, but WOW did he knock it out of the park on this one! The accents and speech patterns he gives different characters are so perfectly tuned that I often forgot I was hearing a single narrator. I enjoyed every aspect of this audiobook.

Disappointed, considering how highly rated it was.
Revisado: 06-27-20
There wasn't anything abnormally wrong with the story, just a common SciFi issue with wacky "science", but it is remarkably slow and unengaging, and none of the characters are particularly enjoyable. The narration is good, though!

A bit rushed
Revisado: 06-24-20
I listen to audiobooks almost constantly, as I am renovating a house, and the books entertain me while I work. What I look for in an audiobook, therefore, may differ from the norm, and it is VERY common for me to abandon an audiobook without finishing it, if it isn't holding my attention. I did not get very far in this audiobook, but for one primary reason that might make it perfect for someone else - it felt rushed.
The narrative flow just skipped off the surface of action to fast forward past the context needed to introduce you to the characters, build their personalities, and create the history that brings them to the actions the author wants to describe. In the first six minutes the author brings out the narrator and the protagonist, has the protagonist agree to tell his incredibly top secret, classified, life story to the narrator without much development of either character, or much development of a relationship between them that would make this decision to divulge secrets ring true, emotionallly, and then has the protagonist launch right into "so I'm a time traveler and in my timeline the Nazis controlled the world."
The details aren't skipped altogether, just described very succinctly and mostly with short, declarative sentences to advance the story to the meat of the plot. This didn't work for me, as I look for books that are immersive, where I feel like I'm getting to know the characters. It might be awesome for other people, who would prefer to get right into the heart of the action and can pick it right up with the author.
The audiobook narration is great - the narrator reads smoothly, makes the voices of each character distinct without being melodramatic about it, and is pleasant to listen to.

Very one-dimensional characters and bad plotting
Revisado: 04-28-20
The good characters are just unbelievably saintly and self-sacrificing and the bad characters are horrid, and they're all shallow and poorly drawn. Which makes the motives produced for dumb actions and hiding what they knew from their "beloved" family members even more ridiculous than they already are, as poorly conceived plot devices to create a mystery where there should have just been a domestic crime. Disappointing all 'round.
